I was wondering what causes the gas pedal to become very hard to press. Is it the tranny? Clutch? I know the clutch is bad but I dont know if this could be the prob. The car is a 91 mtx. I think I read somewhere that this happens to these cars and it has something to do with the clutch ( I could be wrong )but cant find it in a search.

Think about this for a second... Where does the cable run through and what does it connect to? wink

Gas pedal firmness has nothing to do with your clutch. I have a 91 and its pretty hard, compared to the 89s its super hard.

Well sorry yamaha sho but I'm a chevy guy and I know nothing at all about these cars. Im just trying to to get any info I can. Not everyone is as Sho savy as you might be. I did not think that the clutch would be the problem but I thought I read it here somewhere. All I know is that I have driven my friends 91 and his gas pedal is not as hard as mine. Compared to my 89 it is really hard.

Not trying to be an *** ... but since it is not "throttle by wire", the SHO gas pedal is just like any Chevy gas pedal.

Throttle body could be sticky(dirty)... Spring could be hung up... Cable can be snagged... Again, I was not trying to be an as, just thought you should think about it for a second.

Perform a search. You'll find a bunch of information pertaining to this topic. I would do it for you, but I'm feeling lazy wink

Disconnecting the cruise control is one of the few methods used to diagnose the problem. Greasing the throttle cable where it meets the TB spring (do not use WD-40) is something worth trying. SDpatt has a great writeup on this, but I can't find it at the moment. If I were a betting man I'd say you need a new throttle cable. They're discontinued, so you'll have to purchase a used one off someone's parts car.

I have this problem in my 92 and greasing the cable makes pedal travel a bit smoother for a month or so. However, I do plan on replacing the cable in the near future.

The throttle body or cable might be binding, and would need to be lubricated.
That being said, the throttle bodies are different between the years: the throttle body spring is actually thicker on the later year cars. I've compared my 89 to a friend's 92 (both manuals), the spring is 1/3 thicker, and much harder to turn by hand. The 91 might have the larger spring too.
BTW the automatics seem to get the original thinner spring - those with both cars, take a look sometime.

I've compared the throttle body on my 90 MTX to the one on a friend's 94 ATX. The spring on mine is a bit thicker. The pedal is much harder to press and hold at a certain spot. When I get in someone else's car after driving mine, it's burnout

I guess I should say how do I go about doing this? Modify one from a different kind of car or just come up with my own creation

Visit Jeg's or Summit Racing, they'll have what you need. People who build hot rods have to make their own cables all the time.

Don't go through the hassle of "trying to make one". I needed one for my 94. I posted in the WTB section either here or on the other forum, cant remember which one, that I needed one. Someone hooked me up with a used one that works perfectly and the accelerator is now as easy to press as a brand new Taurus's pedal. Here's some info I presented in the event you do end up with another cable, but from a Gen II. They are slightly different but will interchange with minor modification. Cable Info

It's not difficult... route, cut, install the ends on it...
How are you going to fasten the cable to the firewall if you handcraft something like this?

my peddle was really hard so I bought one from alfitz.com and it was money well spent! If I remember right the cables are different on the ATXs and the MTXs. I'm sure you all already know this but I figured I would pass on what I know. thumb

That's what I'm referring to. IF you don't have the ****** around the cable SHEATH, you can't mount to anything to keep the cable housing stationary. Otherwise it would move with the cable inside.
