Ok, I took my car in a couple weeks ago to gete some warranty repairs done and I was getting about 390 miles out of a tank. Now im getting barely 200. What could be wrong?
The plugs were among the items replaced and the throttle body was cleaned.

Dude I think they replaced your 4 cylinder with the SHO engine when they did your repairs... 390 miles per tank. DAMN! Let us know what you find out... kinda a 180 you think the repairs would have helped your gas mileage.

Yikes, a mileage thread.

Keep in mind some of you will have the 16 gallon tank, some will have the 18.6 gallon tank.

The later model SHOs (94-95 usually) have a recalibrated sending unit which will read empty with as much as 5 gallons of gas left.

Better to compare mileage. Driving hard (what other way is there?) I get about 17 in the city. On the freeway going 75-80 I get nearly 30 routinely, and have seen over 30 when going a more legal speed (65-70).

This translates into ~220 miles in the city before I hit the low fuel light. On the freeway I can go almost 400 before the light comes on, and if I'm feeling bold I can push it to 500 miles on a tank, with some to spare.

I have the 18.6 gallon tank, and I get maybe 200-220 miles to a tank, and that's when I take it easy (no hard acceleration). Still haven't figured out why, either. It's been that way since I got the car.

I have a 90 3.0 mtx and I get about 20 mpg highway. Well cruising at 65 anyway. I was getting 32 mpg cruising 80-85 in my 88 GL. I didn't think you could get that kind of mileage in a sho though. I suppose the automatics would get better mileage. Could you guys post what engine size\transmission you have if its not already in your signature? Thanks.

The manuals will get better mileage, which is pretty much universally true. Primarily this is due to better gearing.

A SHO not getting at least 25MPG on the freeway has problems, most likely with the O2 sensors.

I am a new SHO owner, I am getting about 28 on the highway and 23 in the city, and I DONT drive easy. Mine is a 90 5 Speed. 91,000 miles and the A/C is never off. The only work that I am aware of that has been done to mine is a reworked exhaust system that I had done right after I got it, due to clogged cats. I had the valve covers off this past weekend to replace the spark plug seals. The engine was extremely clean inside. I am so happy with every aspect of this car so far. Now I get to shop for tires for it.

Stupid question- how do I know which gas tank I have, the 18.6 or the 16 gallon?

a pretty quick way to figure it out is to run your tank bone dry, then fill it up. if gas is 1.30 for premium, and it costs you xxxx dollars, drivide 1.30 by how much it costs you total and viola. this dosent count in how much was in the tank before you filled it up, which is why you have to get it down to less than a gallon to figure out which tank you have. unless its in your owners manual, in which case im stupid.

When I go to Montreal from NYC it is about 389 miles one way and it usually takes a full tank of fuel to get there averaging 72mph.

Wow! I get around 230 mpg on strictly city driving. and I have a 13 gallon tank. I'm guessing I'd pull around 330 strictly highway driving. so that equals around 18-19 mpg.

On the underside of the tank, there is a marking. It's either an "AA" or a "BA". You can see these marks with the car on the ground. If you have an "AA" it's a 16 gallon tank, which is a factory screw-up or a TSB for fuel sloshing with the big tank. The BA is a 18.6 gallon tank and is what ALL SHOs should have.

Can you take a picture of that marking in reference to where it is on the car please. I would like to check.

I get 300 to a tank of city driving minimium (meaning even if i am on the gas alot) and that works out to about 22 MPG on the highway i get 30-31 like clockwork.

My 91+ used to get 32 on the highway and 25 in the city.

Just look under the car. The gas tank is *right there* and all you have to do is poke your head under the car and look.
