gas float question?

my needle is now stuck at past full. When i fill it up it usually goes past full and after about 70 miles or so, it goes to the full line. But now the damn thing is stuck past full and it hasn't moved. I've tried filling all the way up again but it won't work. How do i get this thing un stuck??

Hmm, not sure on this one. 1st quess is that the sending unit has gone bad. 2nd guess is that the float is stuck on the baffle (not likly, unless someone bent the arm when or if the FP was replaced.

Does it move at all under any circumstances (like when you shut the car off)? If not, it could be the gauge and not the sender. You might want to wait till you've put close to however many miles it usually takes you to get the low fuel idiot light (it takes me about 340-350 miles before mine lights). If you get the light, then the sender is working and it's definitely the gauge. If you don't get the light, then I'd think the float is stuck or the sender is shot.

no it doesn't move at all under any circumstances. i know that for like a year, sometimes when i started the car, the gauge would shoot over full and then within a couple mins it would work its way down to the right amount of fuel that was in the car. But now it shot up after i started it up a couple days ago and now it hasn't come down.

As i turn on the key, the fuel pump cycles and the gauge goes back to full and then right back up to where it stays. grrr. please help.

Sounds like the sending unit is bad, mine does the same thing. When at half tank, it shoots up, then after driving a while it goes to the real reading.
Have you had a chance to run it low on gas since this started happening? Usually, its only bad in one area, it should go to the real reading near the bottom. Has the low gas light turned on at all also?
That low gas light is independent of the gauge, btw. I had the gauge stuck at 1/4 tank once, and I didn't realize that I was low on gas until the light came on eek! .

My SHO exhibits the fuel gauge stuck past full problem as well.. When I bought it, the owner said it'll run about 315 to 340 (depending on driving) before it needs gas..

The low fuel light does come on when its low.. Its been mentioned that its independant of the fuel sender.. Is there a way to test (ohms meter) to see is the fuel sender is bad? Before dropping the tank out to get to it?? I would certainly rather replace the gauge instead of the sender.

The low fuel light uses the same sender.

Your fault indicates a fault in the instrument panel, itself.

VW I agree with instrument cluster problem. I had just had the sender out of mine, it uses only one float for both indicators. However I have come up with a whole diffrent problem which is sort of related. Please read my post called "Fuel Gauge Problem" in the electronics sterero section please. See if you can help me out.

In search of information on an issue similar to mine I found this thread. In mine the car reads full or 3/4 full almost the entire time. It then quickly falls through the remaining gauge range and then the fuel light comes on. From what I have read here it sounds like a problem like this indicates a problem in the instrument panel. Is this correct? I ask because a mechanic told me that it was the sending unit which was a common problem in all Tauri.

My gauge stays past full until the car has 5 or 6 gallons left if the tank. Im changeing the sender as soon as I can (i said that last year). Mine is reliable once it moves down. Its probably the sender if the gauge moves when you turn the car on.

Mine exhibited the same behavior as yours when the sender went bad.

I just compensated for it until the fuel pump also went bad, then I replaced the entire unit.

I used the Airtex (now Master-something) unit from AutoZone. Special order, around $150 inc taxes.

Replaced last fall, works perfectly.
