So I am out playing with the 91 tonight....

Sometimes when turning right, the steering gets tight and there is a loud thunk...

The steering rack was replaced recently by the previous owner, and frankly I have no idea what this could be....

any input?

right side...

I was thinking possible subframe mount....but I dont' know...
I would immediately check for a failed right side/rear subframe mount.

Note: This is a critical safety issue. If that connection has failed, driving the car will be hazardous. If your inspection shows the mount has failed, have it taken immediately to a dealer for likely recall work. Do not screw around if this is the problem.

Check your tie rod ends and make sure the outters are greased good. If it has no grease and/or ripped boot...that's why.

Sounds like a subframe mount, I had the same thing happen on my both of my 91's. Be aware though that the car may not be covered under recall, my 92 wasn't

There is a provision in the recall statement for vehicles that are not in the OASIS database to get coverage. Perhaps your dealer didn't want to expend the effort on your behalf.
