can't tell its about to go just by the whine it emits.

Usually yes.. means its on its way out... that being said.. mine is on its way out.. and has been for about 15k miles..

when it does quit however.. your stuck... ;)

It may not mean it's on it's way out. In most instances aftermarket pumps can be noisier than factory units. It's the same as power steering units. They may make more noise than the originals depending on how they are manufactured. Until you start noticing a loss in performance/ runability, I wouldn't worry about it.

How whiney/loud? Evey pump I've tried in my car (my Civic and 3 are the same) all whine).

no, not necessarily...I had one that wasn't able to keep up the fuel supply when I was in higher rpms...over 4k it felt like I was lifting up on the gas pedal...replaced the pump and it pulled straight through to red line. I used an O-scope and saw that I had a failed winding...it did whine, but no worse than stock.
