Why do you think you have a bad fuel pump?

A bad pump usually is very noisy (You can hear it when you turn the key comming from the back seat) or you will hear nothing at all.

I just replaced my fuel pump and it is a PIA to get to. I ended up die grinding a hole in the back seat to get to it. (Yea I know safety issue, well I am still here.) The bolts were to rusted to take out. Once you get to it, it takes about 5 minutes to replace. I wish ford put a rubber lid over it like on their later model cars.

Here are a couple pics of where it is:

A failing fuel pump can either limit power at heavy loads and high rpm if it is not pumping sufficient capacity or it can shut the engine down if it is not pumping at all. The thermal related pump failure can usually "reset" and allow the engine to start and run after it cools off. This mode usually occurs when the fuel level is below 1/4 tank since the pump body is not being quenched by fuel.
