Fuel pump replacement complete

Put a 190 lph fuel pump on the 95 this weekend due to previous fuel pressure problems. I opted to drop the tank as I didnt want to cut any hole in the floor. Broke 1 of 2 bolts on the strap holder, but napa has those clips and ACE has the bolts.

The new pump is barely noticeable from a noise standpoint. I have to strain just to hear it, but it works like a charm......Idle fuel pressure is 35 psi. WOT pressure is 45. I'm pleased. 87 bucks for the pump...10.00 for misc clips, bolts and other stuff for a total of 97.00. Took me about 2 1/2 hours work time spread out thru the day.

Money saved: Last time I had someone get a fuel pump replaced it cost them like 400 bucks.

Stroked myself a check for 300.00 saved and put it in the car fund.

I'll be replacing mine with the same kit very soon. Would you mind posting the needed components, part numbers, and where to buy them? I know where to buy the pump.

Did you have to trim any hoses or anything with the SHO specific kit?

I too intend to drop the tank as the car is rust-free. Any other hints will be appreciated.

Did your tank need to be cleaned out? If so, how should this be done?

The less gas is in the tank, the easier it is to drop and lift it. And then you avoid sloshing gas everywhere once you have the ring open..

I'm also an advocate of dropping the tank to replace the pump, good to hear it worked out well for you, too.

You say you had a fuel pressure problem, so you went with the 190lph pump ...did you think about the pressure regulator as a possible culprit? I'm asking because I tested my pressure this past weekend and got the following #s: KOEO = 37psi, KOER = 32psi)

which is at the low end of the specs (KOEO = 37-43 psi, KOER = 30-45 psi, as far as I know).

Pump (155lph) and filter I replaced a few months ago. No codes. So I'm not overly concerned right now. But Id rather have more pressure, quite frankly, so I was thinking about maybe the regulator.


As for tips, try and drive your SHO until the tank is low, and then just before doing the job, you can pump the rest of the fuel out of the tank by grounding the fuel pump lead at the EEC Test Connector to run the old pump. Route the fuel so that it goes into a 5 gallon gas container.

Although an empty tank is quite light, it is still a bit awkward, so I used a long piece of wood and a few blocks to help me prop it up and then lower it once I had everything disconnected and the straps loose. Same thing helped with installation. I would soak the bolts good with PB Blaster or equivalent.

The guy ships priority mail the day you order so you will have it pdq. The kit comes with the pump, the ring gasket, a new fuel screen, a fuel line clip, a new wire harness, some wire joining crimp pieces, some fuel hose, and 2 clamps and directions. Basically everything you need except the red duck bill which if you elect to replace, you can buy from the dealer.

TIPS: drive the car nearly out of gas: ie: short trips until it misses when you make a turn, then go home. I drove it till I was uncomfortable taking it to work (5 miles away) and thought I was nearly out of gas. When i dropped the tank, I still had 2 gallons in the tank sloshing on the bottom.

My tank was clean, but there is an area around the pump (a bowl area inside the tank that the pump feeds from).....looks like a big mug attached to the middle of the tank where the pump recesses into. This area had particles in it (small shavings, and any other crap that might have been in the tank). I used a turkey baster and sucked out the pieces...they were pretty small (like smaller than sand grains).

I would go to NAPA and get a couple of the quick nut clips that the strap bolts go into (you will see what they are when you loosen the bolts). I would also suggest buying a bag of plastic fuel line clips...those break easily and you will have to remove like 3 of them when you are doing the job.

Dont forget to test the new pump after you hook it up to the harness (pump not in tank of course...no sense doing all that work to put a nonworking pump in there.

Other than that, the job is pretty easy. I drove the car up on ramps and used my floor jack and a piece of wood 1' x 3' to support the tank.

Just take out the valve core on top of the fuel rail and jump the pins.... then pump the gas into a tank.
