Could anyone tell me where the fuel pump check valve is located. Is it the little orange rubber duck call looking piece at the end of the line? And also, what is the part that is between the fuel pump and fuel line retained with plastic clips. It has a circular metal piece to one side of it. Do I need to reuse this, buy a new one, or disregard and put rubber hose in its place? Thanks.

The fuel pump's discharge check valve is part of the fuel pump itself and the only way to replace it is to replace the fuel pump. The device immediately downstream of the pump is a pressure damper and it is there for a reason. Leave it in place if at all possible. The duck call it the return line check valve and its proper function reduces the rumbling sound you might hear from the tank as the fuel in the retrun line finds that at the lower pressure in the line and after being slightly heated by traveling through the engine's fuel rails that it would rather boil to vapor than remain as a liquid.

Thanks for the reply, you described everything very well. I was going to replace my fuel pump because I heard alot of grumbling going on back there all the time and even had it die on me a couple of times. When I took the old pump out of the tank I discovered that it was a Walbro 190. I did not install this. Now it makes me wonder if the pump is even bad considering that it is a walbro. They dont go out to easily do they? Maybe the problem was just the return line check valve since it does have a cut down the side.

The fuel pump discharge check valve reveals that it is not doing its job when you have to crank the engine for several seconds before it will fire. The check valve holds pressure in the fuel rail when the engine is off and lets it start as soon as the EEC knows which cylinder is which and starts flowing fuel through the injectors and spark through the plugs.

If the fuel pump discharge check valve leaks, it will take a second or two for the fuel line pressure to pump up to normal pressure before the engine will fire. To check if that is the case, prime the pump by turning the ignition key to ON a couple times and letting the fuel pump run for the 1.5 seconds before turning the key to START. If the engine fires as soon as it starts spinning, the check valve is leaking.

The rumbling you are describing sounds like the return line "check valve" and is more of an audible annoyance than a functional problem. While you have it exposed, you should replace it. I have posted the Ford part number in the Forum before so you could search on it.

I just ordered the return line check valve from Ford. After searching for the part (after you told me what it was) and part number on here I realized how many times you have answered this question for other people, so thanks for your help Scott. I'll try your troubleshoot for the discharge check valve too when I get it back together.
