Just thought I would send out request for help. My 92 MTX sputters and dies like it is not getting fuel. Seems like it is fuel delivery related, but before I go replacing the fuel pump, I wanted to get any suggestions, because it only gives me problems at high temperatures (I live in the desert, and it gives me trouble at only in the summer and usually only in stop and go on the freeway). It seems to be heat related, and it seems tell-tale fuel delivery. Has anyone had heat related fuel problems? Is it more likely to be the fuel pump relay, FPR, or the fuel pump itself. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! (Fuel filter was replaced).

There are 2 things you can do to check to see if your fuel pump is working correctly. Check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail and check the codes.

Thanks for the reply. It throws no codes, and, though I have not checked the exact pressure. it does not give me any problems if the temperature is less than 95 or so. Which is only about half the year here in Utah. Never a problem with the throttle, just lose gas when it is hot. It will start up again, but will only chug until it dies. After about an hour of sitting, it will start and run fine for a few minutes, then die again. When the ambient temperature goes down, it will then run properly. Can a fuel pump only give problems in extreme heat, but not at other times? I suppose this is possible, but I am hoping to find out a little more before I replace it. I guess I could carry a gauge around to check the pressure after it dies. Could the pump be bad and I can't tell (ie no problems at normal temps)?

Sure, it could be the fuel pump. It could also be several other things.

Only the fuel pressure guage will diagnose it whether or not the problem is the pump without swapping parts.
