The shop where I dropped my spindle and new bearing off called up and said that I forgot to bring new seals. He says there are extra seals in addition to the seals built into the bearing. I told him there was a dust seal built into the halfshaft on the inboard side, but I wasn't sure about the outboard side of the wheel bearing.

Is there a similar dust seal between the hub and the spindle on the outboard side that's replaced during WB maintenance?

No, the shop is wrong :bonk: The bearings are a ''cartridge style'' with rubber seals already installed. There is no other seal on the outboard side(that sits against the shoulder in the hub) The bearings are pregreased, sealed, and require NO maintenance. Tell the shop to pull their heads out :thumb:

Ditto. There's an annoying C-clip that holds the bearing in and the bearing, and that's it. Unless they're complaining about the C-clip, which is a bit difficult to mistake for a seal, they're thinking of something else.

Thanks yall. I figured it was pretty straightforward. Shoulda known something was up when the guy tells me I brought the wrong bearing because it doesn't have the toothed ABS ring built into the bearing race... well hmm, the old bearing doesn't seem to have one either.

Yikes. A suggestion might be to find a different mechanic at this point...

As was stated, the only seal external to the wheel bearing is the one that is pressed onto the outboard CV halfshaft hub. Just for the record, if you replace the CV halfshaft (at least with a reman), you will need to pry the seal from the old hub and tap it onto the replacement.

The ABS ring is built into the outer CV joint. Thus it's part of the halfshafts. The guy's smokin' dope makin' that mixup. Or maybe he's just having a bad week and his brain's not working right. It happens. I wouldn't pay a pro to work on my car in such a situation. If my brain goes fuzzy, that's one thing. Stop working on car or be prepared to pay for parts I break. But you don't want a pro having bad days at work and have it be your car he's working on.

Or you can leave it off. You don't really need those dust seals. It's hard to remove them without mucking them up a bit anyways.

They are a "slinger". They don't really seal anything, they just sling dirt and stuff off as they rotate.
