Do all I need to do to install my front main seal (the oil pump is out of the engine) is put it in, with the flat side facing outward and the grooved side facing towards the pump?

The flat side must stay outward. If its out of the car you can just use something flat to tap it in gently. If its in the car a piece of PVC pipe will do the job well.

Id wait until the oil pump is installed.
Otherwise, you may wind up damaging your new seal when installing the oil pump.
