my front headrests on my 93 are loose. with them all the way down, they rattle if I hit the slightest bump. more with the passenger side. if I drive with hand on top, no rattle. the black things are screwed tight. the rod going inside is banging against something. anyone else have this problem and fixed it? please don't tell me to drive with my hand on top of headrest.

You need to replace the sleeves. They are what the black "thingies" are screwed into. The P/N is F2DZ-54610A16-A and you need 2 per seat.

Bump...

I'd like to know if seat cover removal is necessary for this as well. I have noticed a significant amount of noise being generated by the headrests in the SHO and would like to solve this issue.

No, they do not need to be removed. First, you unscrew the 2 black trim pieces. Next, press down the fabric around the hole so you can see the metal clip that keeps the headrest from coming out all the way. They slide to one side. If you have long arms you may have an easier time removing them by unzipping the bottom of the seat back and reaching up. Pop the head rest off and remove the 2 guides. You will most likely have to break them to remove the old ones. The new ones just snap into the holes in the metal frame, just make sure to work them down below the foam. Put the screw on bezels back on and slide the head rest back in.

I'm having the same problem, and so I went to Ford today and ordered a couple of tubes for my SHO's passenger seat. Cost me $37.16 for both.

The retainers, I was told, are obsolete, so I guess that's something to keep in mind when doing the repair.
