Im not sure where to look first.

While the car is in the air(on jacks) i can wiggle the wheels back and forth alittle.
My first thought was strut mounts, as i could see the whole strut/spring moving when doing this... but overlooking the fact that the strut is, you know, mounted to the knuckle..... nevermind...  , but the more i think about it, the more it sounds like a wheel bearing(s). Also, tonight, after it finally got below 55* outside, i noticed that i could hear a "rubbing" noise, or a noise that was related to the speed of the car; yet another thing that points to a wheel bearing.

Another thought was the CV shafts....

The reason i thought of the mounts first was because i have a front end clunk that seems to be the strut mounts. I let off the throttle, and hit brakes, it "pops"... I dont think a bearing could make that sound.

Worst case scenario, the bearing is allready f-d, and the knuckle needs to be replaced, right?

TIA.

I'd say the letting off the throttle and hitting the brakes clunk sounds like the CV's to me. But also still possible bearings. I'm getting a rubbing/grinding sound on my focus and its the bearings.

got an air hammer? I do them myself with a airhammer to remove (carefully, then put your new bearing in the freezer for about 2 hours then use the outer housing of the old bearing to beat it in, and of course buy the "hub saver bearing" it will come with a new hub, put it in the freezer too, then get a socket, put your spindle/bearing on it and put it in with a block of wood.

Hmmm...
well the only reason i was suspecting wheel bearings was that the noise that was directly related to speed...

I let off the throttle said:
Check the strut rod housing on subframe as notorious for problem with popping noise as moog service bulletin posted below:

Popping noise in front end. According to Moog Automotive, this symptom is likely caused bv the strut rod bushings in affected 1986-95 Taurus/Sable models and 1988-94 Lincoln Continentals if the noise occurs under braking or while cornering. What actually happens is that the bushing mounting receptacle (the receiver) in the cross brace moves within the frame and causes the pop.

You've got to eyeball the area thoroughly-maybe even remove the strut to get a better look-to determine if that's your problem. Look for indications of movement, such as metal-tometal scrapes and gouges.

If you find the receptacle loose in the frame, Ford says it's okay to weld it back on. But it's necessary to weld only the front surface. If the strut rod bushings need replacing, know that you can use a kit Nvith either rubber or urethane rear bushings. The urethane type is a highperformance bushing that happens to be original equipment on the Taurus SHO.

Moog's part numbers are KS526 for the rubber rear bushing kit and K8516 for the urethane.

Hope this helps as it did for me, I weld the surrounding of strut rod housing and it alleviate the problem as well new tpr bushing installed.

Ahh yeah alright it has been welded, As Howdy Doody said inner tie rod is good probable cause. Did you check the strut mount bearing inside strut mount also Is the hub nut tight? and does it apply to other side as well?

LOL... i havent checked the nut yet. Another thing i should look at..

Im not really concerened with the clunk right now guys.... Im more concerned with the wheel bearings(if that is the cause).

the clunk has been there from day 1, and the P.O, told me about it. He could not figure it out either. He thought it was the sway endlinks, so i put new ones in, no difference.
Allthough it does look as if the inner tie rods need to be replaced.
but like i said, im more concerned about the wheel bearings then anything else.

Should i purchase a new hub? (reman.) or should i be fine with new bearings? I know thats a question in the dark, as i wont know the extent of the damage(if any) until i get in there....

Anyone know if those are correct part numbers?

EDIT:
sorry the autozone link dosent work... But the PN's are- Timken SET49 - for the bearing, and then 520100 for the Hub/bearing assembly from dynapak.

i would rather buy the hub's as i dont have immediate access to a press. (and i really dont feel like building one). But i need, to know if the hub assem. comes with the bearing as well. I know it say it in the title, but, you know how that goes.

EDIT2: does this look correct? the PN's are 520100 just incase.

Those part from o'reily parts seem like only offer the hub and bearing not the spindle?

I ask you if u plan to upgrade your brake system to either '96 or cobra's in near future? because if you do. That is only if your bearing is still usable no threat posed then... look for any 1994-95 spindle assembly from any taurus and sable then while at it have the bearing replaced in it. So you save moolah down the road and have better brake system! Just a thought.

What about your sub frame bushings, or motor mounts for the "popping/clunking" sound? Just a thought.
