A friend of mine has a 95 MTX with around 145k on the clock. Recently, it has started to knock at rpms above 4k. Just today we were cruising around and he decided to race a Monte Carlo SS on the interstate. Well, afterwards, we pulled off the highway at a gas station only to hear major knock. We babied it home (2 miles) and when he pulled into the lot, he noticed that the oil pressure light was flickering. He shut it down and let it sit for a few hours. He came back and tried to start it, It has a very hard time igniting and the starter sounds as if it is struggling to turn the engine over. When it does start, it knocks fairly quiet but when a small amount of throttle is applied, the knock is so loud it sounds as if the engine is gonna blow up. The sound is coming from the front of the engie bay.... up top somewhere. Like i said before, the knock is quiet at idle and the oil light only came on that once. The knock becomes very loud as throttle is applied and the knock seems to be comming from the top of the engine. I cannot tell if it is on the passenger or driver side.

Could this be the end of his rod bearings? Or... hopefully.... could it just be a valve in need of a major portion of TLC? I think that it has had a 60k done around 70k or so but i know for a fact that there has been no valve lash done on it. Please send your ideas... and prayers ASAP as he needs his car soon.

You should have checked the rod bearings the moment you first heard the knock. You may have been able to save your crankshaft and rods. I would start looking for a new engine.

need a rebuild or new motor.

Another fine example why everyone should have their rod bearings changed.

YUP!!! I can almost guarantee it is a rod bearing. DO NOT START IT AGAIN TO SEE IF THE KNOCK IS STILL THERE!!!...IT IS!! Check your rods, main crank and cylinder walls. You may of lucked out and just need new bearings and/or crank. Happen to me also. Good luck.
