while testing and working on my fresh rebuilt ATX I noticed some seriously bad noises.

When I assembled the tranny I filled the torque converter as much as possible before I slid it on and topped up the fluid, i cranked it and ran the engine for 10 minutes, topped the fluid up again. then put the tranny is reverse to see if it would hold a gear.

the symptom is that I get this terrible tapping sound that sounds like a playing card in bicycle spokes. it is bad when the engine is first started, then it slows down. then if i put it in gear it makes the noise very fast.

the tranny was rebuilt by a local rebuilder with a transgo kit. the torque converter is the high revs 3000K with lockout clutch from SHObros and the fluid is Mobil 1 synthetic ATX.

Maybe the pump is bad ....?? Where does the noise come from?? Valve body, differential, TC???? The pump not building pressure would explain why the car won't move. Whatever it is, you'll probably have to remove the trans again. That sucks :frown:.

I'm removing a trans to rebuild right now and have found that they are not that much fun to remove .

it sounds like the noise is coming from the torque converter.

I guess I don't understand what I could have done differently. also if there is a test to see if it something small. I don't have a problem taking it out again, its just how will I know anything is fixed, I will have to have it trans-dynoed or something.

Pull a cooler line off and see if you have fluid coming through. We need to know if you are indeed building fluid pressure.

Are you sure the torque converter went all the way in. And are you sure the flywheel did not have any cracks in it.

Good tip on the cooler fluid flow test. I will try that.

Also I think I slid the converter on all the way, I know it can hang up. If it’s not on all the way can it be adjusted on the car, maybe by loosing the 4 bolts and trying to get it to slide farther on?

Did the converter seat twice. While spinning the torque converter on the imput shaft it will settle, then settle and drop 1/2 inch. That is when she is in all the way. If the converter is not in all the way, you will have no pump flow. It will also sound like a very fast grind noise.

bingo, my guess is the converter isnt on all the way, i almost did this with my mustang, i pushed it on it sat in then went in more, I thought I was done. My buddy goes you sure thats on? i go yeah he spins it more and sure enough it sank in more, good thing he was there. If thats the problem you might be able to take the trans off and try to push the converter on more while its still in the eng compartment to avoid the full removal, although it will still be a pita to do.

well, I feel reasonably certain that I installed the TC correctly, this is my third tranny install and the other two went OK. but when I start second-guessing myself about something I did three months ago, I can't be 100%.

I got the tranny out tonite and will drop it off at the rebuilder for a once over, so I will post what the outcome is.

for some reason my tranny had a 23 spline pump shaft, the converter was a 25. broke the input shaft clean off. it was fine till i put it into gear, then it snapped the input shaft like a toothpick.

dropped it off this morning and picked it up after work. the own updated the pump shaft to 25 spines so I can run the converter I already have, and installed a new input shaft. he says everything is 100%, no metal shavings at all and its ready to run.

I can predict the future. That transmission is coming out again......

why do you say that? has it had the **** dam mod done to it? i read it has the trans go calibration kit, but would have gone with the superior kit, but i don't see that being a problem, does your trany have a extra cooler on it? really if it was done right, with all updates it should last for quite awhile, my sho had the original trans in it with 162k miles on it, still worked, but did the slip slam crap. my new tranny is great, dosn't chirp between shift, i opted to leave out the exter spring in the valve body, but it shifts quick and no flare. just wondering why you think his trany is gunna go, well eventually all trannies fail but shouldn't be for quite some time.
