I recently cracked open yet another transmission and did a little documenting on it. There are a few pics which do have a higher resolution than what I would normally post, but they are within reasonable size limits. Feel free to shoot me any questions you might have.

When I got my car it drove fine... Needless to say 4 hours later my tranny gave. when I got it out there was 2 holes in it:
1) the underside where the fluid started to drain out and
2) The bellhousing right where the dif pin had shot out.
I might add that the #1 hole was about the size of a nickel and the #2 whole was bigger than my fist(about 2-3 inches high and 5-6 inches wide) it had been run dry for so long that the teeth on the differential were breaking off. That eventually led to one of them getting caught in the dif and breaking the dif pin which shot out the side of the case like a "bullet" as you called it. wink After I saw that I had a new found respect for the SHO tranny and all trannys for that matter. Thanks for the write up Beth!!! thumb

Beth, I don't see any of your trademark pink nailpolish on that tranny!?!? naughty
That's because the tranny was toasted. Only my quaifed tranny jobs will get the nail polish trademark. :)

What a nightmare! Especially since in some cases there was no real abuse yet diff pins were still blown out. I wonder if too many 2nd gear chirps could be deadly? shrug

In all honesty, I believe that in some it could be, others not. Every differential is different, some hold up to tons of burnouts while others go the first few times it's done. I have a method I'm working on to reinforce the stock diff which hopefully if it works will make it more durable than it already is. Not an answer to the quaife by any means, but with no doubts it'll hold up better than without the modification. I'll be trying it out soon I hope.
