Doing a clutch now, is it safe to resurface the flywheel, the guy at the trans shop says he "thinks" Ford says you have to replace them but it would be a lot cheaper to resurface it. So is it safe ot be done?

IIRC, the FW minimum substrate thickness is cast into the back side, if it isn't, someone here can certainly look it up for you.

Make sure you have the FW Blanchard (dry) ground, don't let some know-nothing yahoo turn it on a brake lathe, the clutch lining will never seat properly.

a wet grind will keep warping to a minimum though.

One thing to watch out for is the shop that is really busy. So busy that they don't take the time to measure the run-out to determine the amount to take it down. They just set their lathe (most don't have surfacing machines) to take it down .020 and they're done in one pass and they can go do something else. They don't care if they've taken all the thickness away. I HATE those guys.

On the back of my flywheel it says "643". Im guessing its 6.43cm. Its off a 3.0 first gen if that makes a difference. If needed, you can get shims specifically made for spacing a flywheel. IE, if you shave off .030 you can get a .030 shim. They are placed between the crank and the flywheel.
