I have been researching fluid changes here in the forum and have found alot of horror stories.It sounds like it'***** or miss with how long your SHO will last after you change fluids. I'm using castrol GTX (not synthetic) for oil, but with a tranny @ 110K is there any REAL definative answer for tranny fliud change and what is best to use?

Depends what kinda tranny you are talking about

ATX=Automatic
MTX=Manual (5 speed)

If it is an automatic it depends on the fluid change history that the car has and how it is shifting. If it is an MTX I know that some years had different parts (something about brass blocking rings and others had fiber) but different years respond differently. That is at least what I have gathered as I don't own an MTX. Let us know the type of tranny and we can help.

mine is as far as I know stock tranny (ATX 113K on car)

Fluid is very dark and def. dirty. Ive got some Amsoil synthetic ATF fluid in garage

Tranny shifts fairly hard (esp 1-2 shift)

Would you change it if you were me?

Well, me personally yes. But, their is a lot of ppl on this forum that will tell you not to touch it because if you do your tranny will go out. It is a matter of personal choice. I changed mine at 123k and with no prior knowledge of the tranny. But, mine was already actin up before I changed it so I knewe it's miles were numbered. After all that wind, if I were you I would change it. But, many people wouldn't ultimately it is your decision. If you do decided to change it - drop the pan clean it out (the pan) and change teh filter and button it up. So you are mixing the old with the new and it won't be such a drastic change for the tranny, don't have it flushed.

Edit: After rereading your post, put in conventional Dextron/Mercon do not put in synthetic in a used and already suffering ATX. Then you will have unhappy repercussions.
