oh

Last night on my way to the gym I experienced a small car fire. Apparently, my left rear caliper got stuck and generated so much friction/heat, that my F-ing back wheel was on fire.

Flames were shooting out between the spokes of my slicers, like a hot rod with a spark plug in it's tail pipes! madflame

The car didn't feel sluggish, which is the wierd thing. Although right as I was pulling off, I felt a thumping, similar to when you have a flat.

How badly do you think I F-ed my car up? Am I looking at a new rotor, caliper, and pads, or worse?

With luck you didn't over heat the bearing. Otherwise a new rotor, caliper, pads, pins and brake fluid will be needed.

Also the rubber brake lines. And Kev...if it was on fire, you will need the brake lines and more than likely the rear hub assembly which includes the bearing as well.. I've "been there, done that" twice.... (once for each side)

Let me know if I can help at all.

How did you end up putting out the fire? I could have had a similar situation but I caught it first. I felt the thumping so I pulled over and the whole wheel was extremely hot that you couldn't touch it. I waited til it cooled, drove it home, then replaced the brake line which was collapsed (it wasn't the slider pins sticking). If I were you, I would replace what Bizzy mentioned. And while your at it, make sure the other side isn't sticking.

I had a sports bottle of poland spring water in my gym bag. :D

In hind sight, I had my camera too, and should have shot a pic of the wheel before I extinguished it. My slicer had the flame tips shooting out from between the spokes, like the headers on an NHRA dragster!

Hmm....

A buddy of mine and I replaced everything. Wheel hub/bearings, loaded calipers, and hoses. We also bled the back lines.

On the test run, The brake pedal was spongy (sp) and unresponsive. After a few miles, a little puff of smoke would come out with each press of the pedal. Almost like how they show a bull in cartoons puff smoke through it's nose.

I layed under the bumper while he pumped the brakes and I noticed that the hose to the driver side didn't appear as if enough fluid came through it. The passenger side hoses would pulsate with each pedal depression.

What gives? Is the line blocked? Is it because we only bled the rear and not all 4 corners? I spent almost $400 on parts and the damn car is still F-ed up. headbang

Yes, you must bleed all of the brake lines or you will have a very spongy pedal and won't be able to stop. Do the bleeding in diagonals on the car. Right rear, left front, right front, left rear. To bleed the lines, have someone sit in the car and pump the brakes 7 times and then the last time, hold the pedal. Then you will be outside and you open one of the brake bleeders. The pedal will go right to the floor and he holds it there. He'll get tired but oh well. Close up the bleeder and repeat on each side about 4 times. Keep the brake fluid topped off also. This should work.

Thanks Greg, The 4 way bleed did the trick.

Driving the SHO to work today instead of the Jeep was like visiting an old girlfriend. :****: Yeah, Baby!

I had a simialar problem on y 93 cept that in the real cold weather i set my pbrake, shoulda known better, the thing froze overnight and when I released it in the morning the cable snapped and the brake stayed clampped on the right rear, as i was flyin down 295 to work I smelled an awful stench. Thats when I realized the car was feeling a lil sluggish, luckily I stopped in before it got too hot. Stupid me stuck my hand in between the spokes of my rims and OUCH!!!!!!!! Melted the skin right off my finners! Anyway I git it fixed that afternoon and its been right as rain ever since
