Fairly new clutch is slipping... I think I broke something!

Hey guys... long time no see! Haven't had any problems with my SHO lately so that's why you guys ahven't seen me here in ages. Well, now I'm in trouble again lol.

Okay so back last summer after breaking some fingers off my pressure plate I had the following installed: Fibertuff 9-Puck Clutch Disc - HD Pressure Plate - SHO NUT Ceramic TOB - SHO NUT Aluminum TOB Release Shaft Bushings. All these were installed (at AAMCO) along with rebuilding the tranny.

Well last night I was slowly crusing down the road at 50 mph in 5th gear after lowering my passenger's side window and locking it on my friend in 35 degree weather because he stank my car up. I wouldn't put the window back up so he proceeded to act as if he was to pull me out of gear. He pulled it out of 5th a few seconds later and I push down the clutch waiting for him to put in back in gear while we started to slow down with traffic coming up behind us. So I just start revving the motor (can't remember if I had the clutch pedal down at this point) to be obnoxious hoping he would put it back in gear. Sure enough, he puts it back and I continue revving (being stupid) while I release the clutch. So there I was revving at like 6k while IN 5th gear at like 40 mph. I was all joking like, "now look what you did!!". So I go to let the RPM drop and continue on driving. I start to give it gas again and the car doesn't go anywhere. I pulled out of 5th and put in back in thinking maybe he didn't put it all the way in gear. Same thing... car just revs while I coast to the side of the road.

I figured I smoked up my clutch from messing around revving while in 5th gear and got it really hot and that wasn't allowing the clutch to grip the flywheel. So allowed about 5 mins for it to cool and tried again. No luck still. I was in first gear revving at like 4-5k with the pedal all the way out and I was CREEPING at like 1 mph up this slight incline. The clutch pedal felt TOTALLY weird. It was pretty stiff and was giving a firm "thunk" when releasing the pedal completely out. So I call Geico for road-side assistance to have my car towed home. While waiting for the girl to contact a tow-truck driver I though "Maybe I need to adjust the clutch cable??". The self-adjuster has never worked for me (prior to no after the new clutch) and my clutch has always grabbed with the pedal like 90-95% of the way out. With the car turned off and the tranny in first gear I lift up on the pedal, slowly press it down and I got a nice loud click. I thought this might have been what I needed. I start the car up and the clutch slips quite a bit until I have the pedal almost all of the way out and then we're off! I told the girl at Geico to cancel the tow-truck and I was going to try to ride it home like that.

The whole way back home starting off in first gear was awful and I'd occasionaly see the needle on the tach raise while in 5th gear when starting to accelerate. So the clutch was slipping still in 5th gear while curising. Does this sound like I need to replace the whole self-adjuster mechanism or does it sound like I messed something else up internal to the tranny?? I'm thinking it's the self-adjuster because my old clutch nor new clutch never engaged at the correct pedal position. I don't know if all cars do this... but I also noticed in the past that if I were to press in the clutch pedal even 1/2" while doing as little as 1500 rpm the clutch would slip. I would have thought the pedal would have needed to have been pushed down further in order for it to slip. Oh well. Soryr for the huge post guys, but I've learned that the more descriptive you are of how you messed something up, the easier it is to pin-point the problem.

Much thanks,
Andrew

i know with mine, i thought i fried my clutch. But come to find out that it was the quadrent. it wasnt letting the clutch fully engage, or i mean dis-engage.
What tony did for me, Texan Tony, he adjusted the quadrent for me, and all was fine. Allthough a few days later it started to do it again. So i get a new quadrent. put it in.... PITA!!!! really wasnt bad, it was just my first time. So i reset it. Then go into the engine bay, to put the line on the holder...the little fork thing for the end of the line... and notice the dam thing wasnt even on there!!!!! Oh F***..... so i get every thing back together, pull up on the clutch pedal, no clicks. so i manully adjust it, but it wouldnt stay at the point i wanted it at.... but it took care of the "slipage".
allthough it does release a little high, because it wont set any lower, it stopped its what seemed like slipping. I dont know if this is your problem. I would check the linkaged on the trans, the little fork thingy.... make sure its on there, i think that was my problem the whole time... not the quadrent. hope some of that helps....

Take it back to AAMCO and play DUMB . You may have toasted the disc, but the mention of it slipping with little pedal pressure leans towards bad installation/mechanic. And change your friends diet.
