I own a 1999 SHO and I want to get a better sound out of my V8. However I want to keep the factory chrome tips. I have seen lots of aftermarket exhasts on 3rd gen shows and in my opionion none of them come close to the look of the factory oval tips. I'd like to put Flowmaster 40 series of them, because they are within my budget, but I am wondering if the factory tips will fit on the flowmaster 40 series?
any info will be much appericated.
Thanks

I have Flowmaster 40s on my 97, and I have the stock tips as well. If your muffler guy knows what he is doing, he should have no trouble putting them on the new installation. By the way, have them cut out the resonator, and replace it with a piece of straight pipe. It will help the exhaust sound throatier. thumb

And also has the potential to void your warranty and/or cause trouble from your local vehicle inspection people, depending on how they do enforcement in your area. There is another thread going on just this topic that you might want to read and consider before removing the 3rd cat.

He said the resonator, not the third cat. But even still, Ford list the thrid resonator as a muffler as well. North Carolina is pretty ******* emissions and mine is gone. I had ZERO problems in passing emission three days ago.

I have a 97. Took it to Midas today. They said they will have no problem getting the flowmasters on and putting the stock tips on as well. Just need to find someone that is really good with custom exhuast work.

I have been told by serveral people that is true, that is, removal seems not to have an effect on an emissions test. However, some inspection systems are physical, rather than results oriented, and they can flag you there. It is really very dependent on your local. I am not saying not to remove anything, I am just suggesting that checking with your local vehicle inspection enforcement people for an opinion before hand might be worth the time and trouble.

Well, Minnesota has zero emissions or any vehicle inspections for that matter.

You mean you don't care for my dual-oval tips? :D

That is interesting. I am sure your state will be in the minority on this, but you do now have me wondering what other states do not as yet have some form of annual vehicle inspection system. All Canadian provinces do, to my knowledge, and I cannot remember the last US state I have been to that did not, but then again, I have not been to Minnesota in decades and to many US states ever.

Can anyone else report that their state has no vehicle inspection system?

That's not exactly true. Most of southern Ontario has an emissions testing program but that leaves a large part of the province with no e-testing. Quebec has no e-testing whatsoever.

In Illinois it is only in the larger metropolitan areas where the air quality is worse.

Nobody that I know has ever had to pass regular inspections, but here in the middle of Wisconsin we're a ways out from the "metropolitan areas." Not sure if they have them in Madison or Milwaukee.

Missouri has no emmission, aside from the Major cities...... I believe only St Louis.

Maryland has emission testing. Once every two years. In my area they are not all that strict. Last time they did not even check under my car for anything that looks out of place. They just looked for codes, and made sure my gas cap was air-tight, then sent me on my way, $8 poorer.
that really makes me want to get my 3rd cat removed. evil_gri

No emissions inspections in Iowa. AFAIK, the emissions law, if it can be considered that, is "if you have visible colored exhaust in warm weather, it's a violation" or something along those lines. However, I've chugged around town in front of minivans belching oil smoke and never seen them get pulled over for it.

The other interesting thing about Iowa is that all Pickup trucks have a flat registration fee, but cars, SUVs, etc, have registration fees based on the price of the car when new. You could buy a $60,000 F-350 Crew Cab, 8' bed duallie, and only pay a $65 registration, but if you buy a $9800 Aveo, you're looking at close to $200/year.

Ridiculous. And they just increased the motorcycle registration fee. But I digress...

To add to the list- Michigan, home of the Motor City, has no form of emissions regulation or inspection.

No 3rd cat, no res, stock tips, opened up tips, and got rid of those crappy bends in front of the muffs. No problems with VA state inspection, but my car is quiet compared to the rest of these cars around here. :(

gonna fix that tho wink

Orig question: Yes they can use the stock tips, and most places are too effin lazy to do it. So keep checking around. I used 2 1/4 in and out. I think it was offset/offset for my borlas, should be the same for the Flows?
