Has anyone successfully installed an aftermarket HU into the factory spot on the Gen III?? Mine is currently "modified" into the ashtray location, I've been to two different "professional" installers who both say it's virtually impossible, any input would be greatly appreciated

well considering they don't make a football for the dash with a spot in the opening it does seem impossible because our cars have climate control and its near impossible to get one with climate control. i have seen it done though.

I stopped working on it when i upgraded to a different HU. I just got used to it being in the Ashtray... i have another Football that i am going to start working on again. If i decide to make more i will PM you

Mine, only the rear defrost button worked. It was close, but is a complete PITMFA
Don't do it, totally not worth it. Plus in the ashtray the radio is basically hidden from any D bag that wants to jack a stereo.

to the guy that made a faceplate... did you just buy a plate for the regular football without climate controls and fiberglass them together? ive been thinking about doing this lately since i have never attempted fiberglassing and thought it would be a learning experience lol

Not really, that can be put about anywhere. I didn't put it back as I don't use car chargers for anything.

I put mine in the arm rest. It really freaks people out, and i have alot less trash in my armrest too! (ie the center console)

Been there done that, it's a safety hazard. It was the 1st place I put it and only lasted about 2 months before I had to move it.

I don't have that one anymore. I moved and it didn't come with me. As soon as i get some ambition i am gonna make another one. I used a factory football to make it. If you notice the radio will recess into the faceplate a little. I used the install kit for a dodge truck because of that recess. I will get something built here soon. Just need the motovation....

Yeah, that's been the debate with me. It's the same reason I'm torn about the cowl hood - there are no straight lines on the gen 3. I want to at least try it out and make one work, then if I decide I don't like it I can easily sell it.
I'm not worried about the electronics, I just don't want to deal with the fiberglassing work.

Does the handle on the glove box count as straight lines? lol I think an aftermarket radio looks like crap no matter where it is because of it being a rectangle.

No, driving and trying to change cd's, stations, etc. with a radio in the console is a bad idea.

going to start on the cutting here soon. I will take pics as i go. I also may start a worklog on this site to show my progress. That way it can be dulpicated. the last one, i didn't remember to make the temp control to work. Just where the printed circut is. PITA! And i needed to do some minor trimming to the dash to get it to fit. But I will get another one together. If someone wants it after i am done, then maybe we can work something out....
