I got rear-ended a few weeks ago and noticed an exhaust smell when I accelerate WOT. I have a fairly new welded dynomax catback with a fairly new y-pipe from magnaflow. I snooped the entire exhaust minus taking the exhaust manifolds off. Is it possible that the exhaust manifold got a crack from the wreck or the exhaust gaskets are now leaking? I am getting a somewhat reduction in performance and gas mileage I believe. I'm thinking I just need to snoop the exhaust manifold when its cold. Any suggestions?

Hope this helps some

I was rear ended twice with my old SHO, There is a good chance that the exhaust manifold could have suffered some damage. I too noticed an exhaust smell, but never looked into it. I'm sure someone else will post and give you a better explanation as i'm by no means a genious compared to some other guys here. But I do know this for a fact, Get as much from that sob's insurance company as possible!!! The first time i was hit i got 2700! It only cost me 600 to get it fixed like new! If you know a good body shop & have a good ins. company, and get hooked up like i did, and indeed your manifold is broken, you will easily beable to upgrade to some headers, and a few other goodies::naughty:

yea the insurance only wants to give me 1400 for it. They totaled it, but of course I wanted to keep it. I was kinda disappointed with the amount they are giving me. I'm still fighting with them trying to get more. Though my car does have 170k+ on it. I pulled off the front manifold heat plate and nothing looked unusual. I'm pretty certain its a manifold leak though. My exhaust isnt leaking anywhere else.

Forgot to mention that i was hit back in 2003 so the cars value was a bit more. Plus i don't exactly know how bad your damage was(Pics) But it is definatly worth the time to haggle w/ the ins. company. The worst that could happen is you won't get any extra$$$. The real factor here is going to be finding the bumper +tail lights and whatever else might be damaged. If you get lucky you might beable to find a bumper the same color(100-200) tail lights(50-75) and you could install it yourself, or with someone who has basic autobody knowledge. If you are able to do it like that you could still very well pocket over 1000!:thumb:

First look at the donut gaskets - they're the weakest part of the exhaust system. The gaskets may have either been damaged, or the exhaust was tweaked such that they're leaking.

$1400 ? They're low-balling you. Which insurance company?

Other than mileage, what kind of condition was the car in? Also realize that based on the industry standard of 15,000 miles per year, your vehicle is actually a low-mileage SHO (15,000 x 15 = 225,000) - especially for Texas.

How hard were you hit? I would tell them you don't appreciate getting a low-end offer on your cherry low-mileage SHO, which doesn't even take into account all the mods you put on the car. Take them prices of what it will cost you, to replace the vehicle with a same-year, same-condition SHO, to include the MODs. Then follow-up that you've been instructed to get a private appraisal, as per a recommendation from whoever the local ambulance-chaser "One call, that's all" attorney is in the Lubbock area.
