has anyone had a leak in the evaporator for the a/c system. I had dye put in my 93 SHO's system over the summer. freon leaked out within 4 days, must be a good leak. had rear line changed but still leaked out. with that special light, we could find no dye at all. I'm guessing it's the evaporator. my brother is junking a 92 Taurus LX and before we get rid of it, I was going to remove dash for a sort of practice run. the A/C in this Taurus works mint. do you really have to remove steering column or can you just drop it to the floor. I hate to do all this work and find out my 93 SHO has no leak in the evaporator and that these never leak to begin with. thanks for any help.

I had the same problem last summer. System wouldn't hold freon. Put in 2 cans of dye that I picked up at AZ, but the leak didn't show up when I used the light. I thought for sure it was leaking from the evaporator, and dreaded having to take apart the dash. Luckily, I went to an AC shop where they filled the system with their dye, and the leak showed up in the suction/dryer line. Whew! Needless to say, I was relieved!
So, just make sure that the leak is not in the evaporator before you start tearing the dash apart.

Did you look behind the A/C clutch coil for a possible A/C compressor crankshaft seal leak? Yes, the evaporator core can develope a leak. The evaporator core from the 92 may be the same as the one in your 93 SHO. Determine if this is correct before you junk the 92.

Check the refrigerant lines under the battery, also. That foam can trap the dye so it isn't visible.
