For about the last several weeks, when i first start up my car and throw it into gear, the engine (I think) begins to stall out in this continuous way which causes the car to buck until it does in fact stall or until it runs long enough and, for the most part, the motor appears to fix itself. Now I know it's time for a new MAF for my ATX, but it sucks when I pull out of my street and the car randomly stalls in the road. Any reasonable suggestions? By the way, I ran the codes with the KeyOnEngineOff before, and all it said was MAF problem. I think I'm going to check again this weekend, but I really need some help before something serious goes...

And what if does or doesnt run?

With the MAF disconnected, the computer uses a set of pre-programmed parameters to substitute for the missing sensor. If the engine drivability is corrected with a sensor disconnected, there is some fault with that sensor, its wiring, or its input to the PCM.

This same test also works with a number of other sensors including the TPS, the cam sensor, the MAP/BARO sensor, and probably more. It is referred to as FFEM (Field Failure Effects Management) or "limp-home" (or to the dealer). When in this mode, the CEL will always be on and a code of 998 will be present.
