Well I have it torn apart again to fix the crank cancer but lo and behold it doesn't seem like it's cancer?!?!... I put my ratchet on the main crank and turned it while watching the cams and it all moves in perfect unison... I'm still going to pull the balancer and check but I'll be doing some more testing I suppose...

Of course as usual I managed to buy parts for it :nut: ... at this point I hope it's crank cancer so I can just use the parts I bought to fix it...

Well I got the harmonic balancer off today and the keyway and balancer look fine?!? I didn't have time to pull the timing sprocket but I'm a little lost now. Here is a few things I'm thinking about:

A) The rod bearings where done 20k miles ago by SHO parts NW so I doubt they've gone bad

B) Mike at SHOPNW seems to remember the previous owner possibly buying parts to fix crank cancer so maybe once I get the sprocket off I might find the crankshaft is worn...

C) Cam chains or cam chain tensioner?

D) The timing belt is tight and when the crank is moved the cam sprockets move in perfect unison so that's another strike against crank cancer...

E) The harmonic balancer was very tight...

F) I did pull the belts and run the car... the noise continues without the acc belts on....

I have pictures of the keyway and the balancer... I'll post them soon...

Actually the pictures help and it looks pretty good that the front portion of the woodruff key is in good shape. Now you need to remove the metal sheild and view the condition of the small timing gear mounting to the crankshaft. If you have cancer it will be evedent that the gear is distorted or rolled on the keyway.

Good luck, Mike

Well I'm in from the garage looking up what type of bolt holds the CPS on... I haven't made any big discoveries other than some obvious shadetree mistakes (one of the tensioners is missing a bolt, the timing belt marks don't line up with the timing marks) but the main discovery is that my front seal is leaking pretty bad so even if all else looks good at least I can accomplish something

Well it seems like very early crank cancer?? take a look at the pics!

A) Shade Tree mechanics.... ;) notice how the timing belt marks don't line up with the timing marks (cams and crank are lined up)

B) There is some slight mis shaping of the keyway on the timing sprocket, it also slid right off.... the key is pretty good but if you look at the left side you can notice that it's malformed...

C) It's a bad pic but the rear of the crank is a little worn.... Not totally sure how I'm going to fix that.... I have the green loctite so I'll probably bathe everything in it as I put it back together with new parts...

Here is another picture of the "cancer".... I had to adjust the levels in photoshop because the flash darkened the crank wear... It made it a little grainy but I circled the part that is worn...

The question now is how do I fix it?

uh, that's normal.

It's not imperative that they line up but there is a reason there are marks there... You line up the two cam marks and then the important part is the crank mark because they are different for the 3.0 and 3.2, it would be a tooth off or something... I doubt it'll hurt anything (unless it's a tooth off) but it's not "proper"... :)

I guess we're on different pages....

nevermind.

ok?

Anyways I'm going to put it back together... After a close inspection the woodruff key has a very small piece of it missing off one end (about a mm or two) and the key way on the timing sprocket is worn out a tad bit... I hope this is the problem, it's hard to imagine that the noise it was making was from such a small amount of play....

It's back together... it ran quietly up on jackstands. I'm going to let the loctite set up til late tonight and take it for a drive.

In all fairness to SHO Parts Northwest, the previous owner of this SHO was a spend-thrift and only did repairs that "made it run again". There were other "issues" with this SHO that the previous owner didn't disclose to Blake. Blake can elaborate if he wants, but there is more to this. We know maintenance was badly neglected, and there were tell tale signs of it being thrashed by the previous owner.

It's true... I wholeheartedly believe in Mike and Kurts work..... I'm hoping their work wasn't hurt by poor maintenance... or just bad luck.... but it's coming along now, I just don't need any surprises.....

However I've run it at idle and the sound is gone... there is a new one now, a hollow metal twang but it's not loud at all or very concerning.... I'm hoping it was just crank cancer and I can move on from here......

This better be the last surprise though... 2 months and I've had a blown diff pin and crank cancer...

The marks on the belt are there to line it up initially. After the engine rotates a few times, the lines will be off. It's not a problem and the previous owner probably did install it correctly :thumb:

ahh, and now I know :)... I was just guessing it was wrong because some of the other maintenance... to be fair to the previous owner he has had it since he was 16 and kids can do stupid things but in any case....

I'm going to go pick it up in about 30 min, I let it sit overnight at my friends to let the loctite set up....

Well it seems to be fixed, however there is still some noise. It's a very quiet hollow metal ting sound... I think it might be either the tensioner (?) or the metal vanes on the back of the timing sprocket are touching the CPS... I don't really care to tear it apart again but it's drivable. I'm also going to have the wheel off again to rig up the antenna so maybe I'll give it a look see then...
