Man, I have had no luck with these engines....

forst I toast the rod bearings on my 3.0. So I thought that this would be a good time to look at a 3.2. OK Now, the 3.2 had the sound of a diesel engine (something is obviously loose on the top end) and it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side top. Could it be a bad valve shim? I replaced the cam with the one out of my 3.0 Any other thoughts?

Check the cam chain tensioners, and verify you haven't thrown a shim. See if you can isolate a particular cylinder that's noisy, too.

If you see one intake port on the head that's clean and the rest are dirty, you've got a cylinder that's firing the injector but not combusting (correctly). We had Heather's 92 that had the jammed shim bucket / stuck open valve with these characteristics.

Best of luck!

Hey, I occasionally have the diesel sound (comes and goes) but I only notice it when slowing down or in neutral. Never on start up, always after a drive.

I took off the Intake and Valve covers, and looked around in there. Well low and behold, the gear that was on the intake cam at the drivers side that drives the exhaust cam was loose and about ready to fall off. Tightened it up, put it back together, turned it over, did not start, connected DIS, turned it over, started perfectly, purrs like a kitten. 1 hour, 1 slightly scraped knuckle, and the best part of all no $ spent, and the car runs fine. Thanks all for the help.
