Engine sound

I just got to noticeing while under the hood tinkering with the engine running that I can hit the throttle with my hand and if I hit it from an idle and give it a fast rev there is a pop sound. I dunno if it's in the intake or engine related or maybe the throttle slamming shut.

Also, at idle it has a light ticking sound I was thinking injector noise but seems a bit loud to be an injector. Could an engine past due on a valve last adjustment make a ticking sound. Car has 118k on it and sure it hasn't had the 60k or the 120k I think it is for autos. My car is a 93 ATX.

The best investment I have found for tracking down where sounds are coming from are those mechanics stethescopes you can get at sears or autozone. They have saved me tons of guesswork and will you too. Use one of those to pinpoint the EXACT source of the sound, and then go from there. Good luck!

Ok, I have seen my father use a peice of hose to listen.
I will be pulling the valve covers Sunday to put gasketts. I wanted to wait till I got the shims but I can't stand the miss that poped up tonight from the oil in the wells.

Off to hunt a hose diagram.....
