Engine RPM @ Cruising Speed Normal?

Hi Everyone,

I went on a road trip this past week and got very poor mileage (around 20mpg) but I was bucking a 40mph wind the whole time so I wasn't that surprised.

However my question is: I was cruising about 80mph and my engine tach was steady at about 2900rpm. Is that normal for these cars? Almost 3 grand seems high even for cruising @ 80mph doesn't it? The car runs great and I've done a complete overhaul of it with no problems for several months now. All brand new plugs, wires, timing belt, crank & cam sensors, complete exhaust w/ new oxygen sensors.

What kind of engine speed do u other ATX guys run @ 80mph?

I think around 2600-2700 at 80. Your tach may be off, cos if the TQ isn't locked the revs will be well over 3k rpm.

Mine all run real close to 3k rpm at 80 - around 2k rpm at 55. As Jason mentioned, the tachs don't always read real accurately, but you are in the range. You should get 25+ cruising at 80, but bucking a big wind will take that down a lot....

I run right about 2.4K at 65mph, so that sounds about right for 80mph.

im guessing it would be a pretty pricey mod to make it run at 2k at 65mph

My 91' MTX runs right at 3000rpm at 70mph. I also remember my 93' MTX doing the same thing. What tire size are you running. If it's too far off from factory specs, it could through off your speed reading.

80mph should be around 3k RPM... I remember seeing around 4k RPM at 100mph. 3k RPM isn't all that high. My civic runs 4k RPM at 80mph.

I'm running 225/55R16's on stock wheels so my speed i not affected much. If my speedometer reads 80, I'm technically only going just under 79mph

This is for an MTX but you can still translate. I also have the spreadsheet so I can punch in differeng gear ratios and tire sizes.

For you, I think third gear (overdrive off) will be damn near 1:1
