Engine Removal question

Hello,

I'm driving a 255k 92 and the power steering rack is leaking like a sieve. I have decided to yank the motor and put a lower mileage SHO motor in it and i have it stripped down to just the motor/tranny. Here is where i THOUGHT i could just disconnect the motor from the tranny and pull the motor but I'm hearing that the BEST way to yank motor is with the tranny intact.

Can someone tell me if i can just disconnect the bolts from the tranny to the motor and yank the motor or does the tranny have to come out with the motor ?

Yes you can remove the transmission to engine bolts to remove just the engine. But believe me it's SO much easier to remove them together. Not to mention easier to get back together in the car.

Erik's spot-on. The two pieces can be removed separately, but your best bet is to do it all as an assembly. It helps to have a 2nd pair of hands & a load-leveler so you can tip the assembly down on the trans side some, to help clear things like the brake fluid reservoir, etc.

Well once you know your way around the car a little, it's really not that bad to work on.

Take my wife's Rav4 for example. I had to jump the SHO the other day (Sirius radio was on all week while on vacation DOH) and the battery for the Rav4 if underneath a plastic molding by the wipers. You are supposed to use a quarter or other coin to turn the "screws" and remove it to get access to the battery. And I've heard of MUCH worse locations for parts on other cars.

Yeah, like the Intrepid. Step 1, remove the wheel...

The only good thing about pulling the engine from the top is the sub-frame stays intact which meens you can roll the car in and out of your shop if you want!! But if you don't care that your car will sit around then pull it from the top.
