engine rebuild in Louisiana

Ok so i'm planning to have my engine bored out and redone here in LA but i want suggestions or comments on what i plan to do.

I plan to so far take it to a mustang shop that a friend works at and give them the parts i want installed.

So if i were to say hey I want 3.0L-3.2L Clevite rod bearing set
. and keep in mind i am providing all of these parts.

249.99- Total Seal 3.0L Gapless performance piston rings

I don't know enough about the engine to know what parts to order.

it seems that RCM automotive has what i want/need though? tell me what to order!!!

If you're going to have machine work done to the engine, it's best to have it torn down and inspected first, to have an accurate account of what parts you'll need.

For example, if the engine is torn down and the cylinder walls are OK, there's no need to bore it. In this case, standard piston rings will work fine. (FYI, I've seen 200k SHO engines that still had perfect cylinder walls)

The same applies for rod and main bearing clearances. If there's no machine work required, standard size bearings will work just fine.

This is what's commonly referred to as "blueprinting". The machinist will measure all critical components, and compare them to what the factory specs state they should be. It's also time consuming, so expect to pay a little more for this. It is, however well worth the cost. You don't want to just throw in a set of rod bearings without knowing if the crank journals are within spec, you'll be no further ahead than when you started out.

Now, you mentioned having your 3.0 bored out. Perhaps you'd be better off to start with a 3.2, which already has a larger bore? This would save you a considerable amount of money on machine work, and parts.

I've used RCM in the past, and have been very satisfied with Russ' parts, customer service, and speed of shipping.

As far as what parts you need, let's solve the 3.0 vs. 3.2 issue first. Once you decide what you'd like to do regarding that, I would suggest letting the machine shop go through the engine, and tell you what you need. If you have a good enough relationship with the shop, you may be able to save some money by getting the parts yourself.

yeah i would love to convert my MTX over to the 3.2 but northeast or whoever SHO charges 2800$ for that motor completely converted for the MTX and thats not even installed or shipping.

So i need to FIND a 3.2 and then get the shop to do the rest i guess.

I wish i could find out what junk yard has my old 93 ATX in it since it was a mint condition before i wrecked it.

FYI the reason i am having this car worked on is it had about 3 overheat sessions that have seized up the engine do to some bad hoses from the radiator and such.

I'd work on it myself but i dont have an engine hoist. Plus if the walls are infact bad then it will have to be machined so.

I'm at a loss on what to do really.

I guess i will just call the shop and say.. hey i have a 93 SHO can you guys rebuild or assess my engine if i have it towed?

Unless I'm missing something, you can get a 3.2 (if available) for $400 as it sits. This means you or the machine shop will have to swap 3.0 cams, and all accessories required over from your 3.0.

They're also available for $1500 for a nearly drop in condition engine.

Even with all options done (converted 3.2 with 3.0 cams, installation, rod bearings, gaskets and plug wires), and installation I come up with about $2740. Of course, if your car needs anything else while the swap is being done (clutch, subframe bushings, etc) your total may come to more.

IMHO, you're better off leaving something like this to a SHO specialist that knows the car and engine inside and out. At a regular machine shop or mechanic that is unfamiliar with the SHO engine, you're probably going to spend more than what NESHO gets to do the swap, and get no peace of mind that everything is done correctly.

I speak from experience, the last "attempted by someone that had no idea what they're doing" 3.2 swap I worked on for NESHO was back in October. The car came in not running because of a stupid mistake, there were loose fasteners everywhere, and it was generally a shoddy job. Now, the owner of that car never claimed to be a mechanic, but the guy helping him was a self proclaimed genius with cars. As long as we're using the word "genius" in place of the word "*****", he was correct.

Point is, if you want it done right the first time, bring it to NESHO.

if you overheated to the point of the engine seizing chances are the heads are warped and beyond repairing. The heads CANNOT be milled to correct warpage.

fix me please!

I would love to take my SHO to NESHO but as stated before i live louisiana and doug in GA would be closer, but either is a **** of a road trip. I would have to rent a trailor and bring my SHO to them an dropoff Then come get it when its ready. I have the money but the time is killer.. If anybody is heading that way let me know and i'll pay a few hundred to help if my black SHO can tag along to Doug in GA or NESHO.

thanks,

Joe.
