Ok, so I have been getting some strange noises under the hook this past week, especially when I take off in first. My guess is pulley(bearings?), alternator or tensioner. I will have a shop look at it tomorrow, just wanted to see what you guys had to say before I did so.

Im recording right above the alternator, more louder but distant sounding rattle really bothers me, and the higher pitched sound you hear when I rev it and it comes down sounds like the alternator, but Im not sure.

You will need it up a little loud, or headphones to hear it good :)

http://www.box.net/shared/j4f9crt1ms - m4a - source, will need itunes to play, or codecs, if you dont know, get the wma.

http://www.box.net/shared/6oi1xdn3sj - wma - lower quality

unplug the alternator and listen again?

I don't hear anything with these cheap speakers. You can also remove the serp belt and see if it's the timing set.

i hear a belt wine, a reciprocating chirp chirp chirp... bearings off one of the pullies maybe?? can you see any side to side movement on any of the pullies?

and the low distant sound... do you hear it mostly toward the firewall? kind of sounds like water dripping onto an empty coffee can or water dripping off an aluminum gutter... something like that?
I have (had) that same sound on my 3.0 and was never able to find the source. I thought it might be a heat shield rattling off something non metallic, like an O2 wire or plug or maybe the water pump fins rubbing the inside of the housing?

Keep us posted, im interested in finding the solution too.

I hear belt/pulley whining for sure. Like Tom says, remove the accessory belts & see if you can duplicate the sound. Remove one, check. Remove the 2nd, check. That way you can narrow it down to something on one set versus the other. If you hear it with both belts removed, then it's either probably timing belt related.

Kean_SHO describes the other sound pretty much to a T. I had that sound on my 91 also but I never knew where it was coming from and it never seemed to have any effect on the motor or now it ran. I think it has more to do with something rattling on the exhaust, like the cat shields.

Have you done any recent work on the car lately?

I had the y-pipe with the cats replaced over the summer. I do recall this noise after then too, but not as noticeable as it is now. I can also hear it in the car, a rattle, I cant hear the water drop noise inside, but I can feel the vibration from whatever it is.

Oh, the whining noise is the alternator, not the belt.. but I have an under drive and new belts on the way, so they are getting swapped either way.

Maybe check the shields and see if they're firmly in place. If it's loose on a corner or something you could probably tack it down with a little spot weld. A clamp would work also, but could also be a source of vibration noise later on down the road. I guess the best way to narrow it down would be to get up under it and have someone rev it up. Who knows, maybe someone dropped a socket and it's vibrating around on something. I've seen and heard stranger things. I found a pair of those bent nose hose clamps nestled down in the wire loom of my old 91 back in the day so strange stuff does happen.

well, along with that under drive pulley I have a new MagnaFlow Y-Pipe and soon a new cat back... so it will all be inspected and replaced soon.

Well....let me get back with you on that. I've had 2 "vacation" days the past 2 days and have a couple more in front of me. By the time I'm done with these here, I'm not so certain that I'll be up for another "vacation" for awhile. The wavetrak sounds like fun, I've never been on one of those.
