engine noise

my engine started making a weird noise...its like a rattling noise or sumthing...cant pinpoint where its coming from but a friend of mine said it might be the lifters...i was also told it was the timing belt tensioner....has anyone else had this problem? mabe someone knows whats wrong? if this means a partial rebulid im down!!!! : ) but i really wanna know exsactly what the problem is...

manual or automatic? cause if its a manual it could be the throw our bearing. to be sure push the clutch in and see if the rattling goes away. later.

Try and pin point the area of the noise for us, it will help us take an estimated guess at least. You can use a long screw driver against your ear as a poor mans stethoscope.
