Hello, wondering if anyone has any thoughts on my problem. I started my car today( haven't drove it in about 2 months) it started fine and I drove it about 10 miles everything fine. Went home and washed it, took it out again, drove it about another 10 miles and then noticed a small knocking noise. No oil lights came on, but idle started going from 700 to 1200( my oil light will flicker at low idle) anyway it didnt seem like it was loosing power, but noise was getting louder. I continued driving about 5 more miles and car just died. It wouldn't start for about 5 minutes, but I did restart the engine and drove it home, about 1 mile. Now I noticed car had lost power, and was louder, it still idled- didn't die.

Is this a valve problem? I've done all 60k maint. Shims, gaskets, etc. Car has 89k original and is my baby. I dont drive it in bad weather. Anyway before I tear it down again I was wondering what I should check first.

Thanks Chad

You have a spun rod bearing.

Thats exactly how mine went out... Except i had DAYS worth of notice and i failed to act on it. It first started out knocking on engine deceleration. Then it was a constant tap when cold. Then, when racing an Impala SS on the highway, i revved it to 7300 in 3rd and when i idled down, the entire car was bouncin around.

Lost power, ending not wanting to run, loud knock... Thats the trifecta of bad bearings.

Shit, this is exactly what I hear. I'm not sure if it's a knocking from the engine, but I'm hoping mine just might be the throwout bearing, as the clutch is shot and needs to be replaced. The sound will go away if I depress the clutch so that gives me some hope it's the TB, but jesus, I hope it isn't the rod bearings. I don't think my wallet can take the hit. :(

Thanks guys for the info. I guess it's time to tear things apart again. This time I hope to get it back together again in less than a year.
