Hey guys! I'm new to the forum, but not the SHO and it's been about 3 years since I've owned an SHO and I wanted to do an engine swap and put the SHO into a Starion (not into the engine bay, but making it a mid-engined vehicle). I just need to know the W x L x H of the engine. Doesn't have to be exact at the moment, just an educated guess (for those of you who can look under your bonnet) just to see if my idea will even work. Thanks!

Oh, and I know in the Starion's engine, there is a pilot bearing in the block if it's hooked up to an automatic transmission. I know that the 3.2l is usually with the auto and the 3.0l in the manual, but does the 3.2l have a pilot bearing at all?
No pilot bearings on either, but there is a recess in the crank for one. People that need them usually use bushings rather than bearings, it's easy to get a custom bushing made. I have some pictures of an engine with a ruler I will upload later.
Here are some dimensions from side. I'm currently putting a 3.2L in a Porsche 914.
Those dimensions don't include coil pack or DIS module. I'm sure I can dig up another from the front/back with other dimensions.

when I measure the engine, I get
25" wide across the heads, 28" wide at extreme of exhaust manifolds.
27" tall from bottom of pan to top of throttle body.
21" long from trans mounting surface to furthest pulley (atx configuration) and 24" long to the back of the left head.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the info! I think it's going to fit, but now all I have to worry about is figuring how to get a transmission in. I might just use a front wheel drive transmission and hook it up to the rear tires or something. The only problem I face is the transmission issues. I really don't feel like using the original transmission from the SHO. Well, this is all an idea and will progress on what I find for my space for the placement of the engine.
Unsure if this help. If going normal rwd then a 3.0 A4LD trans can be used, Aerostar manual trans bellhousing with mods, or this adapter to a 5.0 bellhousing. Unsure if midengine trans are the 5.0 pattern. Maurice

That looks very intriguing and I just remembered that the engine where I was going to place is in behind the front seats and the weight distribution would end up being in heavier on the rear wheels. I would like to make the car into a track day car but this idea would probably end up being a better drag car since there would be more traction on the rear wheels. I might end up putting the engine in under the bonnet instead. Have you seen the Starion with a corvette engine on youtube? It's phenomenal! He has the engine in the front so maybe I'll stick to having the engine in the engine bay instead of the trunk.... Unless I can change the distribution to the middle by making it an all-wheel drive starion... IDK.
If putting engine under hood. Think about a t-5 and not a automatic. I know I went automatic but will be wife's car. The a4ld is not the most heavy duty trans by Ford. They do have a rep for failing with treated harshly. Good luck with what you are doing. And do lot of measureing. The large oil pan that goes almost to crank pulley and heads that hang off past the transmission caused me alot grief. Maurice
