SHOPWR:
just use thread lock
No don't use thread lock! Teflon selant paste is ideal, but if you don't have any just use a small amount of teflon tape but leave the first 2 threds bare so it wont get in the cooling system and it will also make a ground. BTW my new ECT came with a red sealant on it.

Ya I got the dash guage sensor from Ford and it's got red crap on it so that shouldn't need anything on it. The ECT sensor I got from AutoZone cause it's about $30 cheaper then what Ford wants for it but it doesn't have the red crap. What exactly is the red crap?

Sealant. Pretty much the same stuff that you can get here. I would just use some teflon pipe paste (about $.99 in the plumbing section of a hardware store). Don't overdo it.

Brass going into steel seldom needs a sealant. What you really are doing with the Teflon is providing some anti-seize characteristics to the assembly. Do not use a Loctite type product.
