Well I got the car back Monday (they called Friday but I was out of town)

It was covered under warranty!

Lots of stuff happened to it and I need to read some to get a good descriptive answer..

No 4-5-6 gears (first issue) - answer OD clutches were missing, and direct clutches burnt.. Tech said I had all OD steels and no clutches. Found them in the filter..

No movement, partially from 4-5-6 not being there as limp mode puts it in 5th.. No 5th no move (electronic and mechanical failure)

TSS..(turbine speed sensor) Bad.. electronic and talks with LPC (line pressure control) No line pressure, again, no move..

TRS (transmission range sensor) BAD . self explanatory, (also talks to TSS and LPC) but this is why it would fall into park why the 20 of us were trying to push it up the trailer and why it did it on the way off the trailer..

Start clunk- this is what I need to still figure out.

Whirling noise, thought to be the TC (torque convertor) was the OD clutches 4-5-6 just spinning.

TRS- is a known Ford problem and there is a TSB already out for this.

TSS- is also a known Ford issue and I don’t believe there is a TSB yet, but read 100+ other complaints on this.

I think the TSS failed first, allowing the LPC to loosen its grip and was slowly was having a melt down. Once the clutches slipped enough creating even more heat in the trans beside the already ridiculously hot conditions outside was the ultimate demise of this trans, after parking the car and letting it sit (boil) is when the TRS decided it too wanted to join the party of “no longer working”..

The Trans received a Master overhaul kit (all clutches and gaskets) A new updated TRS and a new TSS, Filter and new fluid.. But during all of this I read the trans section of the factory service book and the cooling parts as well, I figured out how they cool the trans. The old days they used the radiator end tanks to cool and maintain the fluid temps (cool is always the joke) and this would work for the average person, but for the people that want to use the car (SHO- Super HIGH OUTPUT) for its intended use---à FUN then will have to go back to common SHO knowledge and add TRANS COOLER/s. They now use the Ac/ condenser end tank to cool/ maintain the fluid temps and included a thermal bypass again.. So needless to say in short order the Trans cooling system will be modified and will eliminate the Ac condenser out of the plumbing and also remove the thermal switch (used for heating the trans fluid faster in the winter. I don’t drive mine in the winter) and plumb in a nice large cooler, and a trans temp gauge seeing that either the TFT did not work or was miscalibrated because there is a temp warning event that is supposed to notify you that your trans is to dam hot.

I have more to add on my feelings on this car, Still mostly positive at this point, but just disappointed that the car failed on its second time to shine.. at this point I don’t think that car will be able to attend the convention next year, I don’t want to tow it home from Minnesota. But a HUGE thanks to my buddy Don Mallinson for wanting to race my Chevy Diesel vs his EcoBoost f-150, even though he chicken out he saved me 500-1000 in airfare and towing expenses. Thanks DON! I would have whipped your butt anyway.

First time driving it without a tune in almost two years reminds me that tune are great!

Kirk, IIRC I may have heard some chatter from somewhere about an upcoming drive train cooling package for the 2013 that may also be retrofittable on the 2010-2012 models.

Any thoughts on holding out for that if it pans out, or are you going to go it with your own solution?

Where did you hear such a cockamamie story?

Jim, at the banquet when [name redacted] from Ford was talking, he discussed in detail what the PP on the 2013 would entail. That cooling update was discussed in addition to the brake and other updates.

1st, as always, thank you Kirk for posting the update(s) you have regarding your trans issues.

A ton of people, from across the generational Taurus lines do hold your opinion(s) in high regard. So thank you. :thankyou:

2nd, I would really, REALLY hope that the "powers that be" over at FMC are inspired enough by your experiences and input, to cause a fundamental change in the transmission issues that you and others have experienced thus far.

Not only is this issue of concern to me as a current Gen4 SHO owner on a personal basis, but it also of concern to me in the aspect that I work for a medium/large size police department that quite literally has 100+ cars in our fleet, spread across the patrol, investigation, animal and traffic control division(s).

I know that my input alone (based on my personal ownership of my SHO) has been well received by my superiors, as well as those politicians who control our purse strings, enough so that they have opted to order 15 new vehicles this budget year.

We haven't ordered new vehicles in over two years and most of our fleet (of Crown Vic's) are quickly going to ***.

The decision has been made to order both the police package Taurus's and Explorer's respectively.

I can't imagine that the department would continue to swap over the remainder of our fleet (beyond the 15 they've committed to thus far) if this transmission issue rears it's ugly head even further, to the point where it becomes a question in the Administration's minds as to whether they can depend on the product, or not.

I'd be hard pressed to say that if FMC doesn't correct this looming transmission issue, both in civilian, as well as in the police package models, they stand to lose a signifigant amount of potential business.

That's great to hear about the possibilities of the 2013 model year incoporating a design change, but I can't help but wonder where does that leaves the rest of us current owners?

I truly hope that FMC does offer some type of retro-fit, or what have you for current 2010 to 2012 model year owners.

I guess all we can do is continue travelling the path and

I've seen the PI's , the cooling system is vastly different. Including the trans coolers. I know u probably already knew that but the PI's aren't even on the same planet as the standard Taurus.

Obvious Hamal is obvious. I'm only doing what [name redacted] told me to, which is "shush"...

Hamal, I will be doing my own system.. The Guys over at FMC which I do like are never 100% accurate when it comes to things that will be offered.. No fault of theirs they only speak of what they hear and understand, and things always change.. Im glad that they see that there is a problem and going after it.. Remember at HQ last year what was promised? That was a huge booboo! I was told that the addition of coolers is going in the right direction..

The Ford system being good for the intended use, it still will be built for the average person and will need more to suit what we can do to the car.. meaning that this cooling system will be the same across the board for your 2013 that you will track and for my grams going to get Geritol at the quickie mart. Better than what it is this generation absolutely, but the fifth generation car will have better things for the issues that we find.

Taurus Builder, I do understand that they are from the "same" planet and also know that a lot will transfer over. Just have to be willing to modify.. I was explained to in 2010 that the my13 changes would all transfer over, that is partially true but not a simple swap..

Im sure that between now and SNOW time i wont do much other than R and D, but there is a bus in Florida that is hitting some good speeds that we could out fit it into for testing.. Im just jammed for time getting this PSD up to par before the miserable ass cold weather gets here.. that's my number 1 priority.

Maybe Kelvin can get us a track day at Seabring in February.. HINT.. No go cart tracks! :) but I for my own well being have got to go to another track day to see if it will hold up.. im at the point now where it will not go to next years convention, as its a long tow home. and three strikes and its out!

Paul, Ive decided to give this 2010 1 more chance.. If it breaks again at a track day I will trade it in broken and take the loss.. I really love the car and WANT it in the worst way to work. The first time I seen one at the private showing in 09 it was love at first sight and I want it to be that way everyday!

I'm happy at the turnout with the trans and wishfully thinking that I had a defective trans from the start, and it was not the result of a few passes on the track.
