On my gen 1 my e-brake no longer holds my car in place. I checked the brakes and all good almost brand new. the cable however does have alot of slack in it now. Tried to tighten it up a bit an wouldn't ya know the nut is now part of the threaded rod. (rusted solid) Been hitting it with pb blaster and wd-40 and anyother **** i can spray on in no luck (2 weeks straight) tried heat, vise grips on thread and wrenchs also no luck.

My questions are what else might work and is the gen 1 passenger side brake only or both rear?

any help would be appreciated. And if i have to buy a new adjuster where would a good place be to get one. Preferably new.

thanks in advance.

A half fast fix might be trying to find some kind of spacer to put in place. Make an insert or buy a crimp on deal to fill the space between the nut and the bracket. Dont know what out there, but be creative.

KirkShocrzy, my '90 has the same problem. I thought the cable needed to be adjusted but I couldn't get that adjusting nut to move either. I took my rear wheels off to check out another problem I was having (fluid leak) at the time. I noticed the e-brake cable wasn't connected to either caliper. I had my rear brakes replaced and asked if they were able to hook the cable back up, they said it was seized up or something so, no. Long story short, you might mave the same problem.

The e-brake does work a little but not on a steep incline. so i figure the cable needs replacing. Now the problem i have is finding this cable. I checked autozone and checkers but all they have is the front cable. If anyone know the part number and store i can find the rear cable (the one with the adjuster) that will probably work. I think even if i find one salvage it will also be rusted to bad. I do have a few spacers right now but it don't help much. Thinking of just getting a small set of vise grips and locking them on or putting a good weld bead on it but would like to do it right.

Once again thanks for any help.

Item#: UP 94588

Price: $16.69

Thats the left one with the threaded rod, a circle clip, and washer.

Item#: UP 94589

Price: $19.49

Thats the right one.. got the clip and washer too.

those are napa numbers. Enjoy, they arent hard to replace. I replaced mine because if they're that rusty, they'll probally freeze pretty easily, esp in denver. :) I just replaced mine, because i know the rust isnt going to get any better. I can adjust those nuts by hand now, and just a wrench to snug it. Good luck

Be careful to not remove that spring on the calipers. It's a real pita to get back on
