E-brake cable problem

I had dragging rear brakes for awhile, and finally determined (by releasing the e-brake cable from each caliper) that the cable is the culprit.

Question: do I have to replace the cable or is there some way to adjust it? Also, is there a way to test the cable to make sure it's okay?

The cable gets corroded in the casing and sticks. It is not a matter of adjustment. You can remove the cable and try soaking it in penetrating oil, kerosene, or diesel fuel.

You could just replace them if your in a hurry. rangerj

I have the same problem with my rear drivers side brake. I think I will just have it replaced (maybe do the other side too) and be done with it.

A couple additional thoughts.

As both of you are in the North East, where rust is a serious factor, it is most likely that both emergency brake cables are in the same condition.

If you replace one, you will most likely be replacing the other sooner than later. I would replace both at the same time.

After you do replace the cables, or restore them if you care to try that, get in the habit of using them. Use the e-brake every time you drive the car. Like "they" say, use it or loose it!

If you store the car for the winter, DO NOT leave the e-brake in the engaged position. If you start the car periodically while it is stored, then engage the e-brake and release it several times. This should help to keep the cables free.

Or, you could be like me, and have no luck at all... Both of my cables were sticking real bad. I tried lubing them, but that didn't help. I ended up replacing both cables (almost $100 for both cables). Now, the right rear works fine, but the caliper is sticking on the drivers side... Guess what I have to replace now? shoot
