Dyno Runs With and Without BBB's and Ported Intake

I was talking to someone about Turbo SHO's and brought up dyno runs. I asked about if BBB's and Ported Intake would help the turbo or do anything at all, and this is what they said -

We have identical setups, down to the piping and the turbo. Running at 12 PSI of boost. The only differences are I have BBB's and a Ported intake with gasket matching, and they had a complete stock setup.

They got ~32 whp more then I did, which makes no sense at all.

Would this have something to do with the health of the engine? or would having mods allowing more air into the engine with a Turbo slow it down?

This is just confusing, I want to know if its worth it to get the Ported Intake and BBB's before I turbo it or not.

With Ported Intake and BBB's - 348whp 362tq at 12 psi

Stock intake - 380whp 352tq at 12 psi

So many variables between two identical cars its hard to say if that is it.

the power difference could easily be caused by the tune, different plumming, different turbo size, different intercooler, or even a crappy dirty air filter.

This is comparing mine to NcTaurusSHO"s. Same pipe runs, same turbo, same everything.

take a straw and blow thru it.now take a plastic solo cup with the bottom cut out and blow thru it. bigger isnt always better. the fact that the setups are identical besides the bbb and ported intake,i think is the problem itself.your motor needs more air to eat to make that setup work efficiently as his,gotta fill up all that extra volume now.chances are with some change you will end up getting higher then his numbers with minor tweaks where his is prob at its efficiency limit.

worn ignition wires
weak ignition coil
bad ring or rings
tiny difference in the tune
dynoed at different temps, elevations, humidity levels
dynoed on different dynos
dynoed on the same dyno, but in a different way - this even applies to the same car
waste gate leak

the list of possible ways to gain / loose 32hp between 2 different cars that are supposedly "clones" is astronomical, the only way to tell is back to back comparos with the same car, the same day, with runs being as close to possible to each other

Yah, that must be it, they were done on different types of dyno's.

Even the same dyno, from run to run can easily see 2% variations in results. Using the same brand of dyno, but in different shops will result in greater variations, even if they were just calibrated. Who knows when the last time the 2 dynos were calibrated, etc. etc.

i just want to know if i should get EH Intake and BBB's or not before/after I turbo.

wouldnt wast the money. We had all that stuff in the beging the only thing the parts were good for was cash in our situation. Up the boost and tune accordinaly

Best way to find out? Simple, take ONE turbo car, strap it on a dyno, make a run. Pull the intake without changing anything else, and put on a BBB/Honed intake. Make a run. Way too many variables from car to car.

Thats why when mags do dyno test comparisons on, just say, intakes on 5.0L Stangs, its on the SAME ENGINE, SAME CAR, SAME DYNO.

My 82 pulled 480RWHP on one dyno, the next time on a different dyno, she only pulled 459RWHP. With NOT ONE CHANGE to the engine. These were both base runs before nitrous tuning. Again, you cant go by different dynos.

there is no doubt it is faster. i have put bbb's in 3 different cars and raced/driven all of them.

trust me, your gonna get more power.

Personally, I'd take the $$$ it'd cost to get the BBB's/Ported Intake, and use it to fund the Turbo setup. You can always add the intake later.
