Is it possible to change the color of a black interior pieces with dye? Or would one have to swap to a lighter interior just to dye it? I'm not a fan of interior paint, usually looks cheap and feels cheap. :thankyou:

Mismatched black/grey interior. 93 black dash, grey door panels, black console, grey seats, bits and pieces here and there.

Mostly just gathering information right now, besides the console is technically black but I don't think it was originally, I can't seem to get it clean. But really this is just getting information for something I was planning later.

IIRC, it's the original black console. For some reason, the 93-95 consoles look like crap and get sticky.

This car is pretty much the opposite of everybody else's half-assed black interior swaps. I robbed most of the factory black interior out of this car, and replaced it with gray interior parts out of my 95.

I was curious about that, other than the strange stickiness it seems fine. I know you have to sand the vinyl a little when you do a color change, at least that's what I've been reading I could be wrong, I wonder if a redye would fix that. My only real concern is the light and dark pieces possibly cause a matching problem when I try to paint/dye things, whichever I have to do. Wondering if it's worth it to try and work with the black pieces or just try and swap in grey parts before the color change.

It's tough to cover up a dark color with a lighter one, whether it's paint or dye. Your best bet is to swap in gray parts, or dye the rest black.

its just me, but sanding those textured interior parts never turns out ideal.......

if it was something smooth i'd sand it for hours, but once u sand that textured ford style, it is never the same again

came out ok to me? Yes i know it wasn't completely done yet. but thats what the majority of it looked like when we were done painting. It was a little darker at first but its blended nicely and people dont believe me when I say i panted it.

Yeah, I'm not sure why you would try to sand it. I cleaned the parts real good, and applied an adhesion promotor before the dye.

Another solution is to use a solvent to remove the "soft touch" coating that Ford used on the console top before dye it. That's what makes it sticky when you paint it.
