Somebody told me that the cylinder heads on a V6 SHO don't have camshaft bearings.

Is that true?? Do the cams simply rest inside the journals, with no bearings at all?

I never took cams out before, so I had no idea.

From the factory, the caps were installed and then machined through. There are no actual bearings. The camshafts ride on the aluminum from the head.

Do not mix up where each cap goes. They are marked so you cannot do this. The caps closest to the camshaft chains serve as thrust bearings as seen in the above pic.

Okay, so there are no bearings then?

The reason I'm asking is because I have a spare set of camshafts and heads. I bought them for the shims only, and they came separately with no bearings.

Anyway, long story short: I wanted to put the cams in the heads and tighten them down just to get them out of the way. I figured the best place to store them was in the head! But I didn't want to do that because there were no bearings, and so I didn't want to scratch the heads or the cam journals.

Thanks for the clarification and pictures!

If you drop a cam in, you'll note that the cam fits in nicely showing it does not require a bearing.

That thing is sooo pretty! Are you sure you want to install it and get it all dirty?
Heh.... I said the same thing. It's all clean and I don't want to get it dirty :)

BTW, did you get those bearings and that pulley? I haven't heard from you since I sent it and that was quite some time ago.

I thought I replied, but maybe I didn't. Anyhow, I did receive them quite some time ago. Thanks! :thumb:

i asked this question not long ago... its good knowledge.......

I wonder though, do the cams tear up the head castings like this style of no cam bearing setup can do on other cars? I've seen some heads that get so scratched up that people just throw away the entire head...... kinda lame but thats life
