My drivers mirror will not return to it's normal state. It has the darker center with silver ring on it. What causes this and can it be returned to normal. And there is nothing blocking the sensor on the mirror. Thanks

I'm not sure it's the sensor on the mirror, I thought it had to do with "ambient light" which is the sensor on the dash? My 2013 and 2016 seemed to dim the mirror at night no matter what.

The interior rear view mirror controls the drivers exterior mirror. There is a power circuit to the drivers exterior mirror controled by the interior mirror. The drivers exterior mirror will always be darker than the passenger due to the tinting ability. This will also cause it to defrost slower usually.

If it's dark dark there could be a short to power on the circuit, the glass itself has failed or the interior rear view mirror is always powering the exterior mirror. Usually if there is a short to power on the circuit, the mirror will bleed and turn brown. That's an odd description, but exactly what it looks like if it gets too much power for to long.

If you electronically disconnect the mirror and the color doesn't change, it's not a circuit fault. The glass can be changed separately from the mirror assembly. Few hundred more you can get an assembly. You will have to transfer the skull cap (the painted part) It's expensive either way.

Post a picture, I'll try to take a picture tomarrow if I remeber. Or someone in the community will for you.

The interior rear view mirror has two light sensors. One forward and one rearward. If there is more light from the rear than the front, it films both mirror. If you don't have that difference, it doesn't dim.

It should also not dim in reverse if memory serves me correctly.

If you ever have someone on the right of you and no one behind you the system may not dim the mirror and blind you. Now you know why.

My mirror this morning. It's not too blue, but you can tell the difference.

I'll question what yours looks like in normal daylight.

This morning in my driveway. View attachment 7370

One morning when I remember I looks at my drivers mirror when I had the car in park and drive. I put the car in reverse and the mirror cleared up indicating the interior rear view mirror was commanding the exterior driver mirror to dim.

If you have this concern again, put the car in reverse and see if it clears up. If it does, its working properly.
