He also said the sensor is a special order from FORD costing $190.00!! .

FWIW....our cars came originally from the factory with the aluminum housing dpfe, which has been, can you believe, discountinued and replaced with the new current version used now, which is a plastic housing with a different connector. the high price is because the replacement is a kit which is made up of the new style sensor, a new wiring pigtail for the different style connector, and wire splicing connectors. however the current ford retail for this is $151.84, so i believe him to be ripping you a new one on that. the alternative is to go to the ford dealer ask for a dpfe for say a 2000 explorer 4.0. this is the new style part, then you just need the wiring pigtail to change, which you could prolly procure from the J/Y. they tend to be a little pricey at the dealer, unless you can get it wholesale. the new sensor does retail for about $125, but myself would rather pay that than spending my difference in gas going back to the parts store to replace the cheap one 3-4 times......

Old and a goodie. I was getting code 337 after cleaning manifold egr ports thoroughly, so i tried to follow the guide here and noted some discrepancy for both my '03 and '04. Regarding electrical wires and colors, my middle wire on both cars is grey/red, bottom is brwn/white and top was well i can't remember as i type. I had continuity to ground on grey/red. So following these were a little confusing, however, before replacing the sensor, i removed the egr tube, verified egr operation with vac pump, and noted is was very clean.

TIP: An easy way to remove the egr tube at the exhaust is with several extentions feeding from the driver's side fender well while looking up from under car on jackstands.

Bottom line for me, after checking all possible mechanical operation and blockage, not being able to use this thread to test electrically, i replaced the sensor.....viola....no more 337.

About 4 years ago I had the CEL indicating the EGR was not opening (code: 332) and cleaned out the nostrils in the intake manifold and the problem was fixed. 10 months ago the CEL came on after the car warmed up for about 10 minutes. Code 332 surfaced again so I figured it was time to clean the nostrils again and turns out they were still clean. So I drove the car all that time and noticed the car would surge and bog when traveling between 35 and 45 mph. So I figured my trans was on the way out. My car was due for emissions testing and failed. My mechanic told me replacing the EGR will probably not fix the problem even though the code showed the EGR was not opening. (He's honest) He suggested running high octane gas in it to get the catalytic converters hot enough to get it to squeak by emissions testing. That's not what I wanted to hear. So I got my answer here on the SHO forum again.

I purchased a new DPFE sensor from AutoZone for $59.99. I cleaned out the metal lines leading from the exhaust manifold with carb cleaner and some pipe cleaners. The old DPFE sensor looked pretty loaded up with carbon. I installed the new one and PRESTO! CEL is no longer lit and the car no longer surges at 35-45 mph.

Looks like it worked for earth-shaker, but he didn't just slap on a new sensor. He made sure the rest of the system was in decent condition, THEN slapped on a new sensor.

Oy vey. Stop resurrecting old threads. If a search doesn't resolve your problem, start a new thread or at least resurrect one that's only a few weeks old max.
