Any idea if the Gen 1 SLO exterior door handles are the same as the SHO handles? The rear, driver side door handle was sticking and then just snapped off. I'm going to post in the WTB section but figured I'd ask just in case I have to go junk yarding.

They are all the same..... some years have a black finish, some are painted body color, but they are all the same structurally and mechanically.

let's clarify so as to avoid confusion...

the black door handles on the SHO went up to and including 93. the painted ones were 94-95. they are physically different and are not interchangeable unless you change the locks as well, because the locks are shaped differently.

the door handles from a regular slo model from the same year were physically the same as the SHO, although I don't recall if the black/body color thing was the same every year.

At least for the rears the '86 through early '89s are different and are not interchangeable.

Not interchangeable, as in between the SLOs and SHOs?

Not interchangeable as 86-early 89 rear handles won't work on a late 89 and up car without changing the entire door latch assy, SLO or SHO does not make a difference. I don't know if the fronts are different but I have had both types of rear handles in my hands before and they are not interchangeable.

I just checked and it looks like I am getting a 90 door handle, so I am happy. Do you happen to know the difference in build dates between early and late models? I'd like to document that for the future.

Any hints on how to replace the handle?

Using a small drift or center punch drive the pin in the middle of the rivets out. You drive them out from the outside in so put a piece of masking tape on the back of the handle so they won't fall inside and rattle around. Now you can carefully drill the heads off the two rivets. With the rivets removed you can then unhook the actuator rod and remove the handle.

Apparently the latching mechanism was changed in February 1990. I have to find out if the pre Feb cars have the 89 style or if they have some interim mechanism that was unique to a few cars.
