Does a new compressor rule out clutch/coil problems?

I have a brand new compressor, brand new condenser, and full charge of 40psi on the low side. Yet my compressor will only turn on if I manually jumper the low pressure switch. I'm flummoxed.

Wouldn't the fact that I have a new (not reman but new from Ford) compressor rule out any of the clutch, coil, shim problems?

If you can jumper the switch and make it work, THAT is what would rule out the shim/clutch issue. Are you sure you arent bypasing the Clutch Cycling Pressure Switch? They are fairly common problems and should be providing continuity between their contacts until the pressure drops to 22-28psi, then they break contact. If you check it right now, it should show continuity.

40 psi is a long way from a full charge. You are well undercharged.

With an ambient under-hood temp of 80F, you should see a static (engine off and cold under the hood) pressure of 80 to 100 psi.

The pressure cycling switch is intended to close at around 45 psi ascending and stay closed until the pressure drops to around 20-25 psi.
