dimming headlights/dash lights

My 1993 ATX has this problem...I noticed that when I have the car in park and rev the engine...the dash lights and headlights get brighter and dim when the RPM's return to idle. Is this a battery or alternator problem?

Sounds like the brushes need replacing on the alternator.

it sounds like its possibly a little of both. you should have your battery checked to see if its holding a charge or you could take a multimeter and measure the voltage on it, with the car on and off. how old is your alternator? it might not be putting out the proper amount of volts/amps at idle due to wear. i would recommend taking it out and testing it at an auto store, but i know thats kind of a PITA just to test it.

I bought the car 6/01 so I dont know how old the alt. and battery are...

Brushes are cheap and easy.

Check the voltage first. If you're unsure it can be checked at a shop without removing it.

or just buy a $3 el-cheapo tester...

Ive got one of the cheapo ones that stays in my SHO box-o-tools...
