Does anyone here know of a difference between the SHOs built Oct. of 1988 through May of 89 and the rest of the 89s or rest of Gen 1s to do with the exhaust system?

I wasn't aware of any differences. I have a July of 89, still an 89. There was a difference in the midpipe when they started equipping the SHO with a rod shifter in mid 91.

I had understood that only the 89 had the rod shifter. I also think one of the differences of the early ones was the smaller clutch. The 90 and up used a larger clutch since the original one wasn't holding up.

Whatever year they changed the shifter, that is when they changed the exhaust.

Exhaust around the shifter had to be slightly bent to get around the rod shifters in 91. 89s and 90s had cable shifters and needed to have the exhaust modified when converted to rod shifters.
