Got a donor rear diff unit for a project on my car. I thought some of you would be interested in what the internals looked like. The clutch system is press sealed so I didn't tear it apart. But it looks like the differential could definitely have a mini spool put on it with little issue. IMG 20201108 164815 IMG 20201108 170148 IMG 20201108 170801 IMG 20201108 170809

Who makes the D3/D4 rear diff unit? Ford themselves or another company like (example) Torsen?

Wonder how many splines it has and diameter so it can hopefully be matched up to a mini spool or whatever one uses the stock carrier. Itll act as a welded right? Aint no differential then itll be a samerential. Unless its different then whats in it now then its still a differentential. Its my bed time

From what I've been hearing it's JTEKT that produces the driveline components for the AWD system for the SHO/Flex/Explorer

JTEKT is the vendor FMC contracted to develop various aspects of drive line components.

I can measure the diameter and count the spines if you want. Yeah, most mini-spools (spools in general) lock up the differential the same as welding it does. A LSD would be great but then you're talking about something that cost at least a grand. And that's if it was built and off the shelf.

So I have a question for the smart guys on this forum. The clutch section had gear oil in it. I think it was there for the two ball bearings (definitely not for the clutches, they are sealed). But there is no fill or drain for that gear oil. Does this mean that oil is from the rear diff? Is it allowed to seep through the bearings and into the clutch housing area?

It's been a long time since I've messed with one, but they're sealed units and the clutch asm was always a replacement unit, not serviced. For the life of me, I can't remember a drain/fill plug in the clutch pack (you've got it in hand) and that was the part that always failed. I can't say the fluid was crap, but that might be something to check into. Fleet were X-Sports, ymmv with the SHO.
