Does what a dealer would do for a 60k service differ from what more of an enthusiast would have done in a 60k tuneup?

I'm getting my fist SHO next week and I'm trying to find some leverage to get the guy to drop his price a little.

I need to get a list of what SHOuld be done at the 60k. I know that ppl that love thier SHO's are gonna want to do a little more than the service manual lists.

netviper...call your local Ford dealer and ask. One year ago I had my 60K done. I called 3 Ford dealers, asked them what would be done and the price. I got 3 completely different prices...one was $400 higher than the other 2. Funny thing is none included or recommended the valve lash adjustment. I took it to FPS where they did 150% of what the dealer would do for 75% of the cost.
Here's what FPS did:
Valve Adjustment (shims extra), reseal valve covers, intake manifold and port cleaning, tune up with new plugs, timing belt and accessory drive belt replacement, fuel filter, oil and filter service, auto. trans. service, p/s
flush and refill, cooling system service with a new t.stat and temp. sender, computer code check, complete visual inspection, and a vigorous road test for $995.

Good luck,
Tom

yeah I did that. They were kinda lost as to what I was asking. So I wanted to get a list of stuff together that is considered "standard" for a 60k to a 94 MTX. and then have them fax me a quote. I'm trying to find the highest dealer prices, so that I can use that to negotiate the cost of the car I'm getting. Without its 60k done at 65k miles I'm not gonna pay $7500 for the car. $5500-$6000 is a bit more reasonable for a car without its 60k done i would think.

SDPatt, and others have posted this 60k parts list before. I suggest you highlight, copy and paste it into your PC for posterity. The prices may/may not still be accurate, put the OEM part numbers alone are of particular value.

V6 MTX Timing Belt E9DZ-6268-A $53.29
V6 MTX Power Steering/water pump belt JK4-506 E9DZ-8620-E $21.91

V6 MTX 89-93 Alternator/AC belt JK6-450 E9DZ-8620-D $26.20
V6 Thermostat RT 1112 E9DZ-8575-B $26.08
V6 Gauge Temperature Sending Unit SW 2328 F1SZ-10884-A $8.18
V6 Front crank seal E9DZ-6700-B $7.20
V6 Fuel Filter FG-800A $10.70
V6 ATX Upper gasket set F3DZ-6079-C $147.28

For a 120K service, consider adding the following:

V6 MTX Water pump PW-272 F0DZ-8501-A $200.00
V6 MTX Upper Rad hose KM-3084 F5DZ-8260-FA $31.30
V6 MTX Lower Rad hose KM-3086 F5DZ-8286-FA $24.12
V6 Coolant hose 1, U-tube, KM-1719 E9DZ-8548-A $11.62
V6 Coolant hose 2, cooler to therm., KM-1720 E9DZ-8548-B $21.88

V6 Coolant hose 6, TB to engine, KM-1721 E9DZ-8548-C $8.02
V6 Coolant hose 7, IAB to engine, KM-1722 E9DZ-8548-D $7.76
V6 Coolant hose 8, TB to IAB, KM-1723 E9DZ-8548-E $7.92
V6 Timing chain tensioner, RH (special order) E9DZ-6K261-A $96.45
107.17
V6 Timing chain tensioner, LH (special order) E9DZ-6K261-B $44.84

V6 MTX O2 Sensor DY-606(2) F0SZ-9F472-A $103.50 F3DZ-6C315-AA $109.50

Let me tell you something about the dealer...

I called asking for a water pump. The parts guy asked me " is that the 3.0 liter?"

I just hung up the phone.

The point being that a 91 SHO ONLY came with a 3.0. If I had a 93-95 car, then his question would be legit. But if they don't know what motor came in a car that was a "one-motor-only" car, would you really want them working on it?

Sorry Dude. :(

I wasn't paying attention the first time I read your post. I now realize why you wanted "dealer pricing"

Still, the 60k parts list would still be a good thing for you to keep for the future anyway.

You are going to pay through the nose for all that work. If that's not an issue that's fine but I would recommend doing this yourself. There is enough support available for anyone with little experience to do this correctly. Just my $.02.

When I bought my SHO, it had around 65,000 miles on it. I took it to the dealer for a quote on the 60,000 mile service. He said that the factory recommended 100,000 miles for the service and when it was done, I would be looking at over $1000.00 in labor charges alone, including the valve adjustment. I also talked to their SHO tech about the valve adjustment. He told me that he had done three on SHOs. Never seen one out of tolerance. He didn't remove the shims, only checked them with a feeler gauge. His logic was that if they were in tolerance, there could be no wear.

I have had a LOT of engine building experience and this didn't sound right to me. Luckily, I passed on their whole operation, mainly because with the parts, the bill would have been close to $2000.00. Just goes to show how little the average dealer knows about these cars. I have to feel sorry for the people who stepped up and paid the $$$ and went away thinking that since the dealer did it, they were covered for their 60,000.

91SHOPLUS: Thanks for the list, I just found that one while on my lunch break. I'm doing this for a 94 MTX, and the woman that answered the phone asked me if it was the 3.0. That made me wonder.

lugisho: I plan to do it my self or find someone nearby that can do it for me or assist me in doing it, just cause I don't want to screw anything up. But it dosen't look all that hard.

billh: I want the dealer's price to be as high as possible. Not overboard, but high. The lack of a 60k coupled with the 50% used tires, 1 broken ground effect molding piece, filthy engine compartment (with possible bad motor mount), and the owners wife is a smoker. I should be able to us all the above to get him to come down to a more reasonable price. He's not even really someone that loves what he has or anything like that. He just has it and drives it like 8k a year. It deserves to be set free, by me :)

As for the service/parts guy/gal at the dealer asking if it's a 3.0 or ???, I wouldn't worry about it. I get asked if it's a 3.0, 3.2, or 3.8 every time I'm on the phone asking for parts. They've got over 200 different engine configurations for over 50 different Ford cars/trucks to deal with. They could care less that it's a "beloved" SHO. 5 yrs ago my fuel pump went out (under warranty) and the Ford dealer mechanic (keep in mind this is a huge volume place) said he's only worked on one SHO before and knew nothing about the car. I expect this now so I don't go to the dealer.

Oh the old bargaining tool eh? Nice. When you're ready to do it I recommend the 60k video. It's excellent.
